“Great location, excellent hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Gaslamp Quarter location is ideal; not far from Petco Park and the harbor. My room (1026) was comfortable, quiet, with quirky decor and decent (though not spectacular) view.

As a newly joined Kimpton rewards member, the lights were on in my room when I arrived, along with a personal note from the manager and a coupon for $10 off anything from the minibar (and free Wi-Fi, with a strong signal). The restaurant has good food (organic meats, etc.), and the 4th floor pool deck is a fun place to hang out. Try the lavender lemon drop cocktail. Yum.

The staff is what really makes this property a place I'll return to. Angel and Seth, at the front desk, were particularly helpful. Angel told me about a cool speakeasy-style bar not far away, and Seth gave me extra-late checkout when I really needed it. Usually when you ask for late check out, a hotel's front desk clerk MAY begrudgingly give you until 1 p.m., but Seth gave me until 3:30.

My only complaint, and it's a small one, was that on a Thursday afternoon in early February, there was no food service at the pool. (It was a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon.) Nor was there even a menu available to check, and you couldn't get room service at the pool. I had to go to my room, read the menu (the hotel web site doesn't even offer a menu), call the hotel restaurant, have them call my cell phone when my food was ready, then go down and pick it up. Again, it's a small complaint.

To summarize: Excellent service, ideal location, comfortable and slightly hip place to stay, with reasonable prices.

Room Tip: If you have allergies, ask for a room on a pet-free floor. The hotel allows pets, though I never saw...

“Comfort of home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I'm quite particular concerning hotels but was not at all disappointed at Hotel Solamar. The bed was wonderful, room was perfect, the TV was bigger than some and the dinner we ordered from room service was great.

The morning coffee in the lobby is a nice touch. Great location for walking but parking is $40 per night.

Quiet hotel in the middle of town. Good clean rooms, nice bar, lobby and swimming pool. Great breakfast. Not far from places of tourist interest.

Well located for the Gaslamp District, the hotel had decent sized and quiet rooms at good prices. Staff very helpful but valet parking expensive; save 35% by parking in the lot directly opposite the hotel

“Bub's is across the street”

Want to know how I know this? Our room was facing Bub's and apparently over top some dumpsters that were emptied very early in the morning.

We were unable to use the pool for a night because it was booked for a private party. As a guest coming from Anchorage, not being able to use the pool was a big deal to us.

Room Tip: Make sure you aren't facing Bub's or over the dumpsters.

Dear Alaska Guest –

Thanks for taking time to share your comments – this feedback is important and helps us better understand each guests experience.

I am sorry about the issue with dumpsters that were recently staged by our hotel for a 10 day project for a neighboring business which has since been completed; this was indeed inconvenient and not appealing. Please know that our pool is rarely ever closed to guests and if so posted in advance on our event calendar on the website so am concerned to hear that this was your experience or perception. The pool does close at 9 pm each night as our signage and website states so perhaps the hour was the issue. The pool deck in the evenings is also home to LOUNGEsix.

The investment in travel from Alaska is significant and we respect your intentions and expectations; I am sorry that your stay was not 100% up to par. If you do find yourself returning to San Diego please feel free to contact me directly at mark.dibella@hotelsolamar.com and my team and I will coordinate a signature Solamar experience.

Best regards,

Mark Dibella,
General Manager
