“Nice stay, good food, great location”

Stayed for a night this past weekend. There is construction going on at the hotel, but it didn't bother us (may have been because it was the weekend). You have two choices for parking -- $32 for valet parking overnight, or $15 parking in a parking garage right next door. Check-in was quick and flawless. There are 4 elevators and we didn't wait too long for them, but I can see how some people complain about the wait. The elevators are small, so depending on how much luggage one person has, you may only be able to fit 2-3 people in one elevator. Our room was clean, neat and nicely updated. The bed was comfortable and nice size. As with many hotels, it's wider instead of longer, so if you're over 6'3", your feet may hang off the bed, but again I've noticed this is the norm for all the hotels now. If you're a TV watcher, you may be disappointed at their short list of channel choices. The shower was nice and hot, water pressure was great, and the bathroom was big enough for two people to get ready in. The automatic lights in the hallway never came on during the night as some people have said, but the one in the bathroom did. We just closed the door to the bathroom so even if it did turn on, we weren't bothered. One thing that did bother us was that every time someone closed their door to their room, it slammed, which made our room shake. Nothing serious, but annoying. We had appetizers downstairs at the Horton Bar & Grill and the food was good. The pool was heated and the indoor jacuzzi could easily fit 5 people. The hotel is within walking distance to many things. We took a cab to go out at night and it was only $6 to our destination. Overall our stay was good and we'd stay here again.

Thank you for your detailed feedback with regards to your recent stay at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter. I am happy to hear you enjoyed your experience and that the construction was not an issue for you. We are preparing to open the main entrance within a few days and know this transition will be well received. The new layout and design is amazing.
We look forward to welcoming you back in the future should your travels allow.

“Too many things went wrong”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

First I get there for a 2 night stay and the main entrance is under construction. You have to enter through a side door. I get in and there is one person running the desk with two customers in front of me. It took 20 minutes before I made it to the desk. The poor girl is ringing the little white buzzer behind her to get another person to help out, which happens right when I make it to the counter. The girl finds my reservation, and tries to run my card, but it wont read. Nothing wrong with the card, but it just says her computer cant read the card. She calls some number to find out what is wrong and after 20 minutes, she comes back and says, she's still on hold, and asked if I had another card. I told her I need to put it on my company card, and that I just used the card so i know it's not the card, so she goes back and tries the phone again....still nothing. In the mean time, the guy next to me checks in 5 people!! Finally I told her to just run my personal card. I don't blame her, I actually felt bad for her, I blame the computer system that would not read the card.

I thought that after all the trouble they would give me a room with an ocean view, but no, they gave me a view of the ongoing construction.

I get to the room (829), and it was pretty beat up. The pocket door to the bathroom was almost impossible to close (I have arthritis) because it was scraping against some internal mechanism. The wood at the bottom of the sink assembly was all banged up. The klinex box had one tissue in it, the TV remote barely worked, and the area around the lamp was not vacuumed.

I head to my meeting and get back around 4:30 PM. I try to take a quick nap, and a few minutes later, I wake up to a bunch of loud noise coming from outside my window. I look down and see a bunch of union construction people yelling to loud banging music, for TWO HOURS.

I go back to my meeting and out to dinner. I get back and try to go to sleep. Somewhere on my floor, there is a door that is closing and every time it does, it shakes my bed. It wakes me several times. The lights are on a motion sensor, and they continually pick up my feet moving in the bed, and they go on, keeping me up. I slept very little.

The morning greets me at 7:00 AM with more union people yelling SCABS go home. I look out the window and they are already starting construction. They say that construction does not start until 8:00 AM, but it started, right below my window at 7.

They have a program where you get $5 credit if you ask them not to change the sheets. I put out the card, but they never gave me anything.

The elevators were slow and always full. There are 4 of them but I don't think 2 were running. The lay out of the floors to the rooms is very confusing.

The convention rate for the rooms was $50 more than the going rate online.

The only reason it got 2 stars was the comfortable beds.

San Diego certainly is America's finest city, but this hotel is not the reason why!

Room Tip: Don't stay in 829 or any other room above the construction and union workers protesting!

Thank you for taking the time to post your recent experience with Trip Advisor. I am very sorry to hear your stay was less than enjoyable and was not a reflection of the service and standards Westin prides itself on. The protesting is quite unfortunate. We did our best to manage the situation and have worked with the city to ensure the protesting is in line with all rules and regulations. I am sorry it created a noise disturbance that disrupted your sleeping.
I have passed along your feedback about your previous guestroom to our Housekeeping and Engineering team. I am disappointed you felt that room was below Westin standards. We completed a $14 million renovation in April of 2011.

Again, I appreciate feedback and have provided my team with the specifics so we can address and ensure all our guests are experiencing the Westin brand and what it has to offer.

Kind Regards,

“very good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

great location, great staff, only a few things that distract from excellence: lobby under construction, some protests or demonstrations just outside the hotel entrance, long waits for elevators (they could easily double the number for the size of the hotel), large screen televisions in rooms but no HD channels; overall, I would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to downtown San Diego with no hesitation

“Attn: Brian Baucum F& B Supervisor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Our experience last Saturday night at your hotel was made extremely nice due to the efforts of Brian Baucum. We had attempted to make reservations several days in advance and were told there was no rooms available at your facilities as well as other Westin properties in the area. Brian had conversation with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law on Friday as they had been staying in the hotel since Thursday and he was kind enough of looking into the possibilities of a room available for Saturday night. His extra effort in finding a room for us at your hotel so that we were able to spend time with our family and enjoy the many other employees that your hotel has working there.

Looking forward to returning to your location in the near future and look forward to experiencing the same fine accommodations that we had on this trip.

“I hate to give this nice hotel only 3 stars”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

My husband and I both couldn't decide 3 or 4 stars. It was a nice place. Pleasantly decorated. Nice staff. (except the house keeper would just open the door after 9 a.m. like a big "get the heck out of your room.")
But it was the small things to cause the 3 stars. The elevators took FOREVER. My husband claims "hours of lost time waiting on the elevator."
The water was nearly impossible to find a nice temp to wash my face, or usually to shower with.
My husband, myself, and someone else traveling with us in another room all couldn't sleep and had sore backs because the beds were so hard!
Here was our biggest issue... THE AUTOMATIC LIGHTS. OMG this killed sleep. I've stayed plenty of places with auto light switches and never had a problem. This one, we would turn it off with the button, you could walk around in front of it for a while and it would stay off. Some how in the middle of the night, when I would push the covers off, it would detect the motion and turn the lights on! And try getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and getting bombarded with lights the whole way..... :(
4 nights at this hotel and did not get a good nights sleep. I usually look forward to hotels to get away from my old saggy mattress at home. We slept like babies once we got home!
But on the up side, it was in a good location, had a quiet refrigerator in the room and was reasonably priced.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with Trip Advisor. I am very disappointed to read of your restless night sleep. I wish we would have known about this issue while you were here, as we could have had an Engineer adjust the setting. It is also disheartening to hear you did not find your bed to be heavenly. All our beds are the Westin Heavenly bed specification. I am sorry to hear and apologize the elevators held you up and slowed down your transfers to and from your guestroom.

I am glad you enjoyed the location as we are very centrally located. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future should your travels bring you to San Diego.
