“Way above expectations”

In early December I visited my very good friend who lives in the San Diego area. I had a few requests and one was to spend some time at the ocean. She booked the Crystal Pier as she had heard good comments from friends and we both were totally impressed with how fresh and clean the cabin was. Both of us are in the Interior Design related business and have an eye for details and finesse. The rooms were not over designed to say the least ...the futon sofa and rattan chairs were average but plenty good..but more importantly, the cabin was impeccably painted, very clean,we had everything from wine glasses to a fully appointed kitchen and bath. The heater did the job well and the shower was powerful. The scenery was the best on the beach as the pier decks overlooked the surf in both directions! It was a fabulous trip...so good I had to write the first travel review of my life....you just read it!!!

Room Tip: Recommend the Southern side

“Unique Boutique !”

This property is a must see and stay whie in San Diego. We stayed here two nights, the view was never the same. The cottages are comfortable and have enought space to make them functional. It would be hard to replicate the views anywhere.
The only odd thing about this property is the cottages shift slightly when the waves hit the pier columns. It's not always noticeable but it would depend on the size of the waves. It adds to the unique atmosphere and experience.
Would definantly stay here again!

“Enjoyed! Next time, I'd reserve a cottage further west”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Very nice cottages, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in early December. You hear the waves crashing both from your private deck as well as from the interior of the cottage. The cottage had a wall furnace that quickly heated the place at night, plenty of windows, a private parking space right in front of the cottage. The LARGE semi-private deck came with a table with seating for 4, plus 2 chaise lounges (cushions for the outdoor seating are kept inside the cabin in the closet); by semi-private I mean this --> it is a very large deck that is solely for your own personal use, and it has a low fence around it, but you can see the deck of the guest next to you (very much like having a balcony in a hotel --- it is private, but you can see your neighbors if they are on their balcony).

How to turn a 4star experience into a 5star experience:
If I had to do it over again, I would reserve a room as far west on the pier as possible (i.e. as far away from the boardwalk as possible).
We were in room 11, and although we loved the room, it had two downsides with not being very far west:
a) late at night we would occasionally hear loud/drunk people walking along the boardwalk; Being further west would have alleviated this problem by not only being further from the boardwalk, but also the wave crashes would have been louder further west, thus muffling boardwalk noise even more.
b) the cottage would shimmy, like a mild earthquake, whenever guests would drive their car past our cottage when driving to/fro their cottages. Some checked out at 6am, while others drove back from a late night out at 2:30am .... being a light sleeper caused me to wake up several times from the shimmying of the cottage; Had we been in a cabin further west, less cars would have passed by our cottage, and thus we gather we would have experienced less shimmying.

Reserve many months in advance (they book up quickly)

Their WiFi is spotty and slow at best. It was so bad that we ended up turning off our WiFi and instead relied on our 4G carrier's connection.

Each cottage has a single parking space in front of it (you get a permit for 1 specific vehicle -- you are NOT allowed to change out vehicles there during your stay). As well, they come with a kitchen stocked with dishes, pots/pans, and utensils (including the ever so important corkscrew!).

“Bring your own mattress pad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

This is an expensive hotel. We got a special on Groupon and paid half price for two nights which made it affordable. Now, don't expect a luxury hotel. This is a "beach hotel" It is nicely appointed with basic items, but no frills. Each cottage does have a full kitchen which is great if you are staying for more than a couple of days. Private parking in front of your unit on the pier is great and a semi private patio with a table, 4 chairs and 2 chaise lounges with pads is a plus. One thing, if you have never been next to the surf for an extended period of time, it is noisy. So if you are a light sleeper, this hotel is not for you. However, in my book, the bed is one of the most important items in a hotel. If you are not fully rested in the morning, your stay can become miserable. The bed is like sleeping on a concrete mattress. For a hotel of this price range, they really need to invest in a mattress program like more of the top hotels. I give this hotel 3 out of 5 stars for location, the staff was very nice, local (cant beat the beach), but the bed is horrible.

Room Tip: If you are spending this amount of money, stay in a cottage, not one of the hotel rooms.

“On The Ocean-For Real”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

I had never been to California and wanted to stay on the beach. This is a real beach expierence. The ocean is there 24/7. We stayed in a cottage right on the pier. It was lovely. A bit pricey, but for a family of six well worth it. Nice ambience, kitchen facilities, comfy beds and the sound of the sea! Plus we had the real beach and the action right there. It was overcast most of the time we were in town,so it was definately not "sunny" southern Cal.,but when you have a great place to stay it sure helps. :)
