“Comfortable older place, but not the Ritz”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

This is a clean and comfortable older establishment what while a little down at heels is clean and comfortable with good quality linens. The sort of place you would fine in Europe or more traditional places in America. If you need shiny and new & lots of plastic you will not care for this place. But if you like me prefer your money to go to locals and not to global corporations you will be very comfortable. We had Room 12 Suite Sanctuary http://www.balboaparkinn.com/12_sanctuary.htm and were happy with it. The Breakfast is continental pastries and juice, coffee is in the room along with everything you will need including milk (mini-moos) there are good local places very nearby and we enjoyed some local Thai take-out. The bed was spotless and comfortable, and the room very quiet particularly considering that it is right next to Balboa parks. Light sleepers will want inside rooms with courtyard rather than park views. Plenty of seating in the courtyard to enjoy the fine weather. I rate it very good for the location and quiet, the decor could use some work (loose the plastic flowers) and the morning pastries could be fewer in choice and higher quality. I would stay again if there was not someplace I had not yet visited available (I like to see it all). Good place for a family trip.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms for light sleepers, but traffic is not heavy after 10pm

“Nice hotel, very kitsh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The hotel (or is it a large B&B?) is locateed in a couple of old houses in a beautiful residential area along Balboa Park. The decor is resolutely kitsh, it is a matter of taste of course. Upon entering the room, one is struck first by the decor, and at the same time by the excessive smell of air freshener. That, too, is a matter of taste, but breathing these chemicals all night long cannot be very healthy. I did not like the envelope requesting a tip for the maid, to be handed at the desk on check-out. Don't they pay their staff?
The bed was good, wifi was clear, there were a fridge, coffee machine, microwave, and everything was very clean. Continental breakfast is brought to the room, which is nice. Parking is on the street, easy to find.

“We loved the Jungle Nook!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

My husband and I recently stayed in the Jungle Nook room at Balboa Park Inn. The room is decorated in a way that some might find "over the top," but I thought it was very fun! The walls are painted to look like jungle plants and there are exotic animals everywhere. There were even a few Christmas deocrations added here and there, which we thought was a very nice touch. I thoroughly enjoyed watching TV while I took a shower in the huge shower built for two. Didn't get a chance to use the huge bathtub surrounded by flameless candles, but hopefully I will next time. The room was VERY clean and comfortable. I did not smell any mold that previous reviewers ave mentioned. The staff was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The breakfast was more than enough to get us going for the day. Each day we had an assortment of breakfast breads and pastries including a cinnamon roll, mini muffins, panetone (my new favorite!), croissants, and various other things. My husband also ordered cereal each morning and we both had juice. There is a well-stocked coffee bar in the room as well as a microwave and a fridge. This room is adjacent to a beautiful courtyard where we enjoyed our breakfast the first morning of our stay. It was very quiet. I did hear a little bit of noise from our neighbors above us on the first night of our stay, but nothing that was going to keep me awake. The Inn is walking distance from the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park and an easy drive from Sea World. The only negative things I can say about this property are these:

They have no parking lot, so you have to park on the street. Some areas are No Parking at certain times on certain days, so you have to pay attention.

There was never any hot water in the bathroom sinks, and it took a little while to get hot water in the shower.

The Jungle Nook room is great for couples, but the setup of the bathroom areas wouldn't be good for traveling with friends or relatives as there is little to no privacy. (Not really a negative, just something you should know.)

And that's it. Everything else was wonderful and I can't wait to go back again. I would definitely recommend Balboa Park Inn to anyone looking for a fun place to relax!

Room Tip: The Jungle Nook room is great for couples, but the setup of the bathroom areas wouldn't be good...

“Great B&B, walking distance to the San Diego Zoo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

I mainly selected this place because it sounded nice and was walking distance to the zoo. The rooms have personality as others have said and my wife really liked it. Breakfast was good and the area is great, no complaints!
