Stayed here marathon weekend with a great discounted rate through Marathon Tours. Experience was less than expectations generated by the glowing reviews. This is a solid hotel, slightly preferable to a generic Hilton/Westin/Marriott, but by no means a luxury or true boutique property (definitely not in the same class as, for example, the Commonwealth or XV Beacon).
The location is convenient to Back Bay, Copley, and the Public Garden, although the block and building itself are nondescript. It's a great location if you're running the marathon.
The common areas are rather dull, and my initial impression on entering was "nothing special." Front desk staff was pleasant at check-in. Bell staff was just plain lame. On check-in, they dumped my bags in the lobby and did not offer to bring them to the room. On check-out, the bellman disappeared somwhere between the storage closet and the front door, and I had to send the doorman to find my bags.
As others have mentioned, the elevators are just weird. The rooms are a little on the small side, but adequate. The bed is comfortable, but furnishings are otherwise spartan. There is no separate seating area, only a small armless chair jammed between the window and the bed. Lighting is poor, the absence of any reading light next to the bed is particularly annoying. The bathroom lacked any decor or warmth. It also lacked a bathtub. Water pressure in the shower was weak. Plenty of towels, which was appreciated. No coffee machine - apparently they only provide these in "deluxe" rooms - a policy which would encourage me to stay somewhere else rather than pay for a fancier room. The free internet was nice. Strong signal with adequate download speeds.
I thought the breakfast buffet was overpriced for the selection and quality. (But then I've found Boston hotel breakfasts generally disappointing.) Service at breakfast was excellent. They did offer what looked like an appealing (and fairly priced) pre-marathon pasta dinner. This is a nice touch.
Overall, I would say the value for the price was good, but there was nothing else about this hotel that made a particularly positive impression or would cause me to stay again absent a really great room rate. (If 3.5 stars were an option, that would be my rating.)
