Due to a work schedule conflict and the hectic 'fall colors' season in BEAUTIFUL Asheville, I wasn't able to book at my hotel of choice (Hilton Biltmore Park) so I went with the Comfort Suites Biltmore Square instead.
Due to it's proximity to the Biltmore and to Asheville proper, as well as the Biltmore Square mall, I assumed the hotel would be 'up to par'. Let me warn you, this is NOT the case.
First, I arrived earlier than expected by a couple hours, so I approached the on-duty front desk staff (heavy-set male who prides himself as a 'culinary school graduate') and inquired if I could possibly check in early. This gentleman barely had the energy or professionalism to even meet my eyes (or even vocalize clearly) that this would not be possible. Instead, he looked at me as if I were from another planet and totally stupid for even asking such a question. He actually chuckled at the idea and didn't even bother to make the effort of checking (let alone asking my name to verify my reservation). He offered no consolation, not even a simple "You are welcome to wait in our lobby and utilize the free Wi-Fi while you wait for a room" - - -NOTHING.
Next - the room! Ok, so it looks to be a pretty decent motel room with all the expected creature comforts.....key word...."LOOKS". The SMELL of the room was unbelievable!!! This is a "100% Non-Smoking" property but my room reeked of smoke so badly I thought it may have been used as a meeting room for an AA Meeting or something.
Since I had very little time until an evening meeting, I chose to believe the smell was maybe from an adjacent room and would dissipate with time. However, returning to the room later in the night, the smell was still just as horrible. Since it was after midnight and the hotel was booked solid, I did what any other traveler would do....I slept in the room.
I awoke the next morning and my asthma was acting up, my sinuses were clogged and all I could smell was the STENCH of a nasty ashtray that was my room and now... all my clothing and luggage.
I reported this to the young man working the front desk in the morning and he, to his credit, did notate my complaint. He said they would either take care of the smell or move me if possible. I told him that I would expect nothing less and expect that the hotel MUST change all the linens and probably even the sofa cushions since the smell was so strong. He agreed and said he would pass this information along.
Returning to the hotel after a very long day, I was looking forward to nothing less than relaxing in my "CLEAN" room. I hit up the front desk (staffed again by the 'culinary expert' and an older, white-bearded gentleman (maintenance?). I asked if anything had been done to take care of the room and 'chef' again chuckled at me and told me they were 100% full and nothing could be done.
I asked him about the day-shift guy having noted my complaint and he then begrudgingly checked his log and told me that the manager "Michael" had personally sprayed the room to eliminate the smell, and that was all they could do. The maintenance guy behind the front desk with him also tried to support the theory that this 'magic f'breeze' product could overpower any smell and I would be happy. (I did ask if they also changed out all the linens and it was implied that this was common practice and obviously would've happened).
So.....imagine my surprise when I walked into my room only to find that the smell, though dissipated somewhat, was still very strong and eye-burning!! As if this was bad enough......the room hadn't even received housekeeping services at all (I was gone from 0730-2000 hrs!!!!)
Based on my experience so far, this hotel could possibly be a quality property fitting the needs of most travelers......IF management can get a handle on the staff and actually hire folks who can, at a minimum, show some indication that the guest is just that....A GUEST! Instead, I felt, from the moment I walked in the front door until the final time I left that they were doing ME a FAVOR by ALLOWING me the OPPORTUNITY to stay at their property. I left feeling tired, ill, smelly and like I had just thrown away my employer's money by staying at this property. I would have been equally served staying at a Motel 6.
So Sad!
Room Tip: Don't Stay Here - that's the only tip I can offer.

Our staff prides themselves in providing great customer service & I assure you that the issues you've raised have been addressed, and the appropriate action has been taken. Sometimes we do have guests who ignore our smoke-free policy & smoke anyway. We try to catch this when it happens so the smell can be thoroughly removed. I regret that this was not addressed before you checked into the room. Comfort Suites Biltmore has received many great comments & reviews & I truly hope that you will give us another opportunity.
