After living in the Asheville area most of my life it felt weird staying in a hotel when I came back to visit. This hotel was a good choice though. The location is close to downtown, but to call it a downtown hotel is a bit deceptive. The room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the staff was very friendly. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Asheville Downtown on Tunnel Road for two nights. The hotel appeared to be fairly new and inn good condition. The hotel was placed on a piece of property probably a little too small for the size and number of guests so the parking is a little weird. The drive leading to the check in area is one way and narrow. There are no spaces assigned specifically to check in so people park their cars in the drive to check-in. We got stuck on the road, because someone had parked their car to check-in blocking the road and someone pulled in behind us. Did I mention that the road was one way and narrow. To avoid this, when you go to check in, just go to the parking garage and avoid the front entrance, especially at busy check in or check out times.
We had booked a king suite and were given room 630, a corner suite on the top floor. The suite was two rooms, a living room area with a sofa bed, table, chair, and television and a bedroom area with a king, tv, dresser, etc. A hall with a counter, small sink, ref, and microwave separated the rooms. The bath was nice, but nothing special. The room even had a walk out balcony overlooking the mountains with sliding glass doors. Everything was in working order and good condition.
Other than the parking, we had two issues with the property. First, sound proofing between the rooms was non existent. We could hear the people in the next room carrying on a regular conversation. When they started laughing or talking loud, it was almost as if they were in the same room. We could even pick up parts of the conversation. The second issue was that the spa / jacuzzi in the pool area was full of kids jumping in and out of the spa and pool. Very irritating, and the parents did nothing about it. Not relaxing at all.

If you are looking for a place to go and relax, this is probably not the hotel, but if you just need a room for business or as a base to explore Asheville, it should suit your needs.

Other points: 1. Even though the hotel bills itself as DOWNTOWN, it is no where near the real downtown. Although you could walk to downtown (probably 20 minute plus walk), you have to walk through a traffic tunnel that may be a 1/10 of a mile long. Not a scenic or inviting walk. 2. There are numerous restaurants close by including an Steakhouse and a Chain Country Food Restaurant just Outback of the hotel that are easy walks without crossing any streets and there is a grocery store across Tunnel Road.

Asheville Restaurants are busy, especially Saturday night. If you want to enjoy a quite dinner, do what we did. Call in a takeout order to the Steakhouse next door, go across the street to the grocery store and buy wine and dessert, return to the steakhouse to pick up your order. Take everything back to the room and enjoy.

We stayed at this hotel because it was the cheapest 3 star rated hotel. It was fine, basic, and clean .Adequate, nothing more. The pool is teeny, the lobby is teeny, and overall unimpressive. It is located on busy tunnel road, near big box retailers and across the street from supermarkets and restaurants. It is not in the historic or quaint downtown, and is a hike from the downtown area. It does not give you the feeling of being downtown, where it is beautiful, lush with greenery and views of mountains.. It is not far from the Biltmore, and convenient if you have a car. The staff was friendly and efficient.
