“As a last resort”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2009

I made a reservation to this Super 8 on line since it was close to the Biltmore. Mistake!!! Sure it had all ameninties it had listed; however, it is dated and not the cleanest place I have ever stayed at. We left very early in the morning without taking a chance on their colntinental breakfast. Only stay at this Super 8 if nothing NOTHING else is available and ask to inspect the room before giving them your credit card number.

Location to the Freeway Exit 44 was good. This Super 8 must be next on the list for upgrades. Our room was filled with dirt and dust on the floors. I did not know I was going to be camping inside. The towels and sheets were clean, but the towels were paper thin and small. The noise from other rooms was easily heard from our room. They had outside workers sleeping in multiple rooms. I saw some of the rooms with more than four adults per room. The continental breakfast was a joke. The food was presented in another dirty room next to the office. This food was awful. The waffle iron had not been
cleaned in ????? weeks. Overall: This locations was an embarassment to the Super 8 franchise and to the Ashville community.

“Check your room before you unpack”

We stayed in the Super8, Tunnel Road for 4 nights. The first room we saw was in a dark corner, with a view of a wall and no exterior lights. We changed to a room on the fground floor, which was much better, as it fced the pool. There were some problems in the room, no microwave or refrigerator, remote for TV did not work, we had to change the channels the old fashioned way, by hand on the TV itself!! 2 lights not working. Breakfast was hit or miss, you had to be early to get anything, if a food item ran out that was it. The location is fine, near the Interstate and downtown.

“Nothing fancy, but it's clean and peaceful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2006

My wife and I have stayed there twice for a week during the past five years, and I've stayed there by myself on occasion overnight. Considering that it's right off the interstate and surrounded (on the Tunnel Road side) by various businesses, it's really very peaceful, quiet, and almost secluded. By all means, stay on the back side facing the Swannanoa River and, yes, the train tracks across the river. There's a small park-like area on the riverbank. The trains run at night, but I like trains so I don't have a problem with this. It's sporadic and only lasts a few minutes. As for the rooms: they're not the newest and some aspects are a little worn by age and normal use. Nonetheless, they're clean and comfortable. The price is definitely right. The staff is very friendly and down-to-earth. The laundry room is bare-bones but adequate. The down side: the breakfast has to be eaten in the dining area (I suppose they have to do this to discourage people taking more than their share), and there is no microwave, none that I saw anyway. We like to heat our own food (we're vegetarians) and eat healthfully. You could always buy a cheap microwave and bring it with you (management might have a problem with this if they knew, so don't mention it and be kind of discreet), if you have dietary needs and travel on a budget. There's a charcoal grill pit if you want to use it, as well as opportunity to fish (supposed to buy a license). Also, the pool was not ready for Memorial Day weekend, so I brought swimtrunks for nothing. The Zaxby's adjacent to the motel is superb (as wings, fries and salads go). This is our mountain "home away from home" and we plan to return again, this time with our son who will be born in March 2007. Oh, by the way, the place is definitely kid- and pet-friendly. All in all, we are very positive about this place. Very enjoyable stays!

  • Liked — Quiet, peaceful, scenic location with friendly staff and everything you need.
  • Disliked — Kind of age-worn but it was clean and you get what you pay for.
  • Tips/Secrets — For a simple, no-frills mountain vacation on a budget, this is the place to stay!

“Not-So-Super 8”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2006

When I booked the room, I reserved a smoking room - ground floor if possible. Upon check-in, we were informed that the only king smoking room was upstairs. So we took the room. This room had to be the smelliest room I have ever had before. Granted, I know this is a smoking room, but even my husband, who is a smoker, could hardly stand the odor. It literally reeked! The exhaust fan in the bathroom was inoperable. There were no ashtrays. One of the bedside lamps wouldn't work. There was only caffeinated coffee - no decaf. No TV channel list. Carpet was filthy. We were afraid to walk around without house slippers! And to top everything else off, the motel is situated directly next to train tracks!!! Probably no more than 50 to 100 yards from the back side of the motel. At least we were on the front side. Since we had already unloaded the car and had everything in the room, we stayed the first night there. The next morning, we requested to be place in a different room or we would be checking out. Our clothes were permeated with the stink of the room. The front desk personnell seem kind of irritated by our reqest and said we would have to wait a couple of hours until housekeeping had made their round to be moved into another room, when there were only about 5 cars in the entire parking lot!
We agreed to take a non-smoking room on the ground floor and my husband just stepped outside when he wanted to smoke. This room was much better. Smelled clean. However, the exhaust fan did not work in this room either. There was no microwave or refrigerator and the battery compartment lid for the remote was "duct tape". If we had gotten this room first, I would have been satisfied. However, I would not recommend nor would I stay at this motel again. The best thing going for it was the free hot breakfast - which wasn't exactly great. Some kind of "egg" (not sure it was real), sausage, crunchy-bottom biscuits, waffles, muffins, bagels, cereal.
There were some really nice looking motel/hotels on this exit. I think any of them would probably be better than this one.
