We recently spent six nights at the Days Inn (north) Asheville/Woodfin. Medium priced chain hotels are practically non-existent north of Asheville, and, outside of some cabin lodgings and B&Bs, this Days Inn was our only choice for a place to stay. I agree with an earlier reviewer that Days Inns have become "hit or miss" when it comes to quality, and for that reason they are not at the top our list for stays - especially six night stays! However, we really needed to stay close to Weaverville this trip and wanted a hotel setting. Most of the reviews on TA were favorable, so we gave it a shot.
This Days Inn was above average in many ways. The room we had (the upgraded "mini-suite" with two queen beds and small refrigerator and microwave) was spacious enough for a small table and chairs and a tiny loveseat/"sofabed-let" and coffee table, besides the dresser/TV stand and desk. We were on the first level near the pool, and easy access to the car was appreciated since we had to cart several things with us each day (this was a "working" vacation, so to speak). The beds were very comfortable, the linens adequate, and the AC worked great. No complaints about these things.
Wi-fi was extremely peppy and we never dropped a signal, accessing a notebook, netbook and two iPads during our stay. The only thing that would improve the room (for this price point - this is not a luxury hotel, and one is not paying an outrageous price to stay there!) is better lighting and more electrical outlets, especially ones that you don't need to move furniture to access. The motel is older, built long before electronical access for mulitple devices was the norm, so it's understandable. But the lighting was the worst. We ended up carefully removing lamp shades so that we could see after dark (and we're not so old that the eyesight is that bad - yet :-) ). The area where the closet and unit for the refrigerator and microwave was, back in a corner alcove, had NO lighting, and there was no outlet for the coffeemaker. The counter over the refrigerator is a logical space for the coffeemaker, since the microwave is above the counter on its own shelf, but it's useless to move it there without a place to plug it in! We usually travel with a power strip but forgot to pack it, so we picked up a cheap one at Walmart in our travels. If they supplied them at the front desk with a small deposit required, we would have sprung for it! :-)
Because the Days Inn is totally non-smoking inside the rooms and lobby we were worried at first that the pool area with tables, chairs and those cigarette pole disposals might become a place that smokers congregate on mild evenings, resulting in noise or odors outside our door (and maybe seeping in under the door). This was NOT the case - even though there were people outside smoking and conversing, we could not hear them or smell smoke from inside our room. Greatly appreciated!
Although we had no trouble locating the Days Inn (we're familiar with the area and knew how to get to it), it might be useful to have a bigger or a tastefully lit sign at the bottom of Reynolds Mountain Blvd. It must be frustrating to see the hotel from the interstate, get off the exit and try to figure out how to get to the Days Inn which is up on a hill, sort of tucked away and not totally visible from down below. Again - another slight improvement, but not a reason to avoid staying there, of course.
Another reviewer mentioned that the charge for his entire stay was printed on the bill he received at check in. We received the same thing - the price charged to our credit card for six nights at check in. Fortunately, we anticipated staying for the entire period and this was not a big deal, but I wonder if this becomes an issue if one need to check out early for some reason? We've stayed at resorts and hotels that require pre-payment (usually during busy seasons in popular vacation spots) but cannot recall having the hotel stay for this level and style of lodging being fully charged at the time of check in.
All in all, this Days Inn appears to be operated in an efficient manner by innkeepers who care about their business. It definitely benefits by being the only lodging of its genre in the area (no competition nearby), but does have some "unique" ways of doing business, like charging your credit card up front. Other reviewers' experiences when attempting to stay there (turned away because they lived within 50 miles of the hotel - even though they reported having legitimate and legal reasons to need a room!) didn't affect us so we have no idea how rigidly the management applies these policies or if they are applied consistently.
Our stay was pleasant enough and we believe we got what we paid for. Definitely will remember to pack a power strip and maybe toss an extra desk lamp in the car if we stay there again. Once we move to the Weaverville area (our vacation/soon-to-be retirement home is under construction) it will become a moot point - we won't need to stay in a hotel, and perhaps they wouldn't allow us to stay even if we *had* the need to do so, since we will live nearby! :-)
