I'll cut to the chase. When we first entered the room, we checked for signs of bed bugs and didn't find any. They were there anyway. When we awoke in the morning, there were blood stains on the sheet on both sides of the bed. I found a tiny scab on my neck. This made me even more worried. I examined the bed further and found a tiny bug full of blood on top of the sheet. Two days later and my wife who has bad reactions to bug bites is covered in welts. Fortunately our baby sleeping in a portable crib seemed unscathed.
I called the front desk. The person on duty was nice about it and immediately offered to put us in another room. But he was strangely nonplussed about it (a common occurrence?). Later in the day, he confirmed that they found bedbugs. This was room 223. We relocated to room 233. At the time of this writing, I am not sure our bags which we moved were not infested. So if you are staying in either room, beware.
Before moving rooms, we showered and bagged all clothes that were out during the night. The whole move took up the grater part of our morning. After researching what to do about bed bug infestation we learned that dryer heat kills them. However the front desk would not provide us complimentary quarters to use the washing machines and dryers. "I'll have to ask my manager" (we never heard back). Lame!
In consideration of our problems, the motel comp'ed us $30 for one night. I told the clerk that wasn't much considering the trouble and trauma. "I would have to talk to my manager who isn't here". Again, lame! We had planned staying three nights, but were so traumatized by the experience, we left after the second night. I should mention, that we didn't see any evidence of bed bugs in the second room after waking.
I understand that bed bugs are not an uncommon hazard and that any motel is susceptible. But how a motel deals with the infestation and how they handle the customer service aspect of it is their choice. Comfort Suites, Moab chose poorly in this regard. At the very least, we could have been offered a profuse apology. They couldn't be bothered with even that. I write this review as everything that was in the room is bagged in the back of the truck awaiting debugging. I don't know what the expense will be. We also worry the cab of the truck may have been compromised by us putting a backpack and diaper bag we had in the room up front with us.
Aside from the bed bugs, some other things to note:
1) Master suite was a nice size.
2) Breakfast was way beyond what I expected from a continental breakfast. It was the best I ever had in this level of motel, quite satisfying. The woman on duty at the breakfast was very attentive to all details.
3) Bathroom tubs in both rooms had nasty looking drains with hair in them.
4) Carpets in hallways and rooms didn't seem very clean.
5) Indoor pool is large, but too cold.
6) Not within easy walking distance of downtown
7) Grocery, dollar store, and Moab Brewery are next door.
If we hadn't had bedbugs, I probably would have rated the experience as average.
