“Avoid the Chains and Stay in this Historic Hotel”

I needed to visit the Greeneville, TN area for a quick business trip. A local suggested the General Morgan Inn in downtown Greeneville and I was pleasantly surprised. Typical rate is around $120 and you get a pretty nice room for it. The hotel started serving customers in the late 1800's. The furnishments are time period appropriate, both in the lobby and in the rooms. My room was large and the bed was amazingly soft and comfortable. Bathroom was adequate although nothing to write home about. The only downside to the room was the HVAC. It was not the type to run at a constant low capacity. Rather it came on, ran on full for a short period of time and shut off. A little loud, but once I fell asleep I did not notice it. If you're a light sleeper, though it may wake you up. The restaurant downstairs was quality and a good place to grab a bite to eat. Breakfast is complimentary, but continental and it closes as 9:00am. If you're a late riser, plan on something else.

Parking is free of charge. It's a bit hard to find the first time though as it's behind the building and the signs are small. You might end up driving around the block to find it.

A word of warning to the those with disabilities. The hotel was not built to accomodate and there are many small (5-6 stairs) steps leading to different landings even on the same floor. For example, although my room was on the third floor, after I left the elevator, I had to walk up 6 steps to get to my room.

All in all, though it was a very comfortable and restful night.

“I don't want too many people to find out about this place!”

Real linens, down pillows, beautifully restored architecture. I have stayed here several times and always had a very nice stay. The staff is super nice. I worked in the Hospitality industry for years, so I know the difference.

The General Morgan Inn is very clean, the rooms are quiet and very well furnished. For me, the perfect blend of antique furnishings and modern conveniences. This place is also just dripping with history. The "lightning bolt of the Confederacy" (General John Morgan) was assassinated in the old church courtyard (adjacent to parking lot).

Go read the plaque in front of the courthouse across the street. A very large portion of Eastern Tennessee tried to secede from the state at the beginning of the Civil War. The Confederate Army came here and occupied the place. Pretty interesting...

There's a cannon ball in the side of the church down the main street a block to the east (I think) and there's plenty about President Andrew Johnson (17th President and former tailor) 2 blocks to the south.

Don't let anybody else give you a bad impression, check out the General Morgan Inn and judge for yourself.

“So relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

We stay here a couple of times a year, whenever we need a break from real life.

The hotel is beautiful, with soft, comfy beds and high ceilings. Rooms prices vary with time of year from $100 to $150 or so a night. Room service was the best deal around - great food and not too expensive.

The staff is so friendly, they really made us feel welcome.

Plan to spend a bit of time around the corner at one of the antique stores. We always find a little something to buy. Otherwise the downtown area is clean but mostly vacant.

hint: You park in the back behind the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room far away from the convention area. When a wedding is booked, it tends to get a bit l...

“Nice architecture and staff”

The bed was comfortable and the sheets were nice quality. However, it was difficult to sleep due to noise in the heating/cooling system. The hotel also only had down pillows which was a porblem for my husband. The restaraunt wasn't open for a bite to eat when we got in around 8PM. The immediate strip though quaint didn't have any immediate dining options either. Building is beautiful and staff was hospitable.

Thank you for your feedback about your recent experience at the General Morgan Inn. I am very happy to hear that our staff was friendly and accommodating and that you enjoyed the architecture of our building.

However, I was quite concerned to read about your experience with our pillows. Because we understand that some guests have an allergic reaction to feather pillows, The General Morgan Inn discontinued using feather pillows on our beds quite some time ago; however, there are a few feather pillows kept in the guest closet. It is possible that a previous guest used the feather pillows and our housekeeper failed to recognize the difference when she cleaned and reset the room for arrival. In response to your review, we have asked our Housekeepers to ensure all feather pillows have been pulled and tagged with a label so that we do not mix up our pillows again.

We apologize for any discomfort and frustration that this caused you during your stay. If you notified our front desk with a request for non-feather pillows, you should have been accommodated immediately. I would welcome your reaching out to me so I can personally apologize and work to regain your trust in our hotel.

Thank you again for your feedback, we want to be the best loved hotel in East Tennessee, but we'll never get there until we learn from the times we're not at our best.

Sincerely,

Julia Beach

“The Best!”

We have just finished driving over 1500 miles through TN and KY, and this was our most favorite hotel. The hotel maintains the grand old flavor, the beds are fantastic, and the restaurant outstanding. The staff in all departments was the utmost of professionalism. If I had to plan a conference, this is where in would go.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay at the General Morgan Inn, and we are so happy you enjoyed your guest room and dining experience.

Wow ~ 1500 miles through Kentucky and Tennessee? In October, that must have been a beautiful drive.

We hope you thoroughly enjoyed every mile (and every corner) of these two states!
