“Strange... but good. I think.”
Man, what a weird place. It seems like a college kid inherited a run-down old motel from his grandfather and tried to fix it up by spending $500 at IKEA. The room looked like a dorm room - juvenile color scheme, odd desk chairs, torn carpeting, and nothing on the walls except two 8x10 ads for a coffee company, much too small for the space they were meant to decorate. Flat-screen television hung crooked on the wall, with wires just hanging down. The biggest, loudest, most confusing air conditioner/heater I've ever seen. Even the time on the clock was wrong. If there had been a bong on the nightstand, the picture would have been complete. Anywhere else, this place would be around $50 a night, but since it's in San Francisco, it was $129. Pretty galling, once you see what you paid for.
However, there were some good things about it, too. First of all, and most importantly, we actually got a fantastic night's sleep. (See my review for the Opal, which led to our last-minute reservation at La Luna, when every other hotel in the city was booked up.) Beds and pillows were comfortable and clean. We checked online for bed bug reports and it came up clear, and our experience bears that out. By the way - be sure not to take any room ending in -01 through -10. Those rooms face Lombard Street and because of the proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge, traffic is both loud and never-ending. Our room was 311, just at the corner of the building and mostly shielded from the street noise, and the higher numbers are at the back of the building, facing the quiet neighborhood of Cow Hollow. With our crazy loud heater running for white noise, we didn't hear a thing.
The location is great, too. As I said, it's just a minute away from the Golden Gate Bridge. Walking distance to the Palace of Fine Arts and the Presidio. Right outside the Presidio gate is Liverpool Lil's, an old-school pub and sports bar (see my review). Plenty of restaurants, gas stations, and a Walgreen's pharmacy, all within a block or two. On-site parking is free. Iron and coffee maker in the room. Supposedly there's a continental breakfast, but we slept through it.
All-in-all, I actually do recommend La Luna for single guys, or for couples who can handle an occasional no-frills night. There were half a dozen semi-pro skateboarders staying there at the same time, and I think that pretty much sums up the perfect demographic for this hotel.
Room Tip: Make sure your room number ends with -11 or higher, to avoid the traffic noise from Lombard Street.
