This trip I was looking for budget prices and I'm always looking for a convenient location, and Vertigo was the winner.
We had a "petite queen" which was really not that small. 4-6 feet on 3 sides of the bed plus a walk-in closet - I unloaded stuff we wouldn't need daily on the huge top shelf. Desk, fridge, and ARM chair didn't seem cramped. Cute bathroom with an older tub but nifty modern accents (like the rain-making shower head).
Decor is white, black, and orange, modern and retro and just the right bit of campy.
There were some scuff marks on the walls and a few dings on the furniture, but the bed was fresh and comfy and everything seemed quite clean.
The neighborhood isn't the best, right on the edge of the Tenderloin, but we walked everywhere during the day and didn't feel unsafe. (The latest we came back was at 11 or 12 pm it was in a car and we used the valet service.) There are a few odd people in the area but you can avoid the streets where most of them hang out if you want.
Parking is done by an outside valet service that uses multiple nearby garages. Never had trouble getting our car within 20-30 minutes but you do have to plan ahead.
We walked to Ferry Building and North Beach, but those were a haul, 20+ minutes - but not unpleasant. Union Square and Japantown are closer. No hotel restaurant or bar but with all the great places to eat & drink in the city, who's going to the hotel restaurant?
So, good little hotel in an older building, definitely worth the low price.
