Location: The Villa Florence hotel is in a very central location just off the famous Union Square. Beautiful shops and many forms of transport are just outside the door. The hotel is very clean with L'Occataine bathroom products renewed every day. There is free Internat and printing facilities in the hotel behind reception. The price per night is expensive (€146 dollars per room) but it is worth it because of its centrality.
Tip: Please note that the bottles of water beside the coffee maker are not complementary. They are part of the minibar and will be chaged to you bill at the end at a cost of €4.75 dollars per bottle. Make sure to buy your water and bring it back.
Transport: I would strongly recommend purchasing a €21 dollar 3 day travel card that entitles the individual to unlimitted city travel for 3 days on the buses, trams, cable cars and trolleys. It's fantastic value particularly when 1 trip one-way on a cable car is €6. It can be purchased from a Tourism or Travel Information office. It doesnt entitle you to use the BART system (the underground railway system that goes to the airport and Berkley University).
Cable Cars: I would definitely recommend a trip on one of the San Francisco's famous cable cars. The views are amazing. When you exit the Villa Florence Hotel, turn right and walksstraight for a few 100 metres until you come to the terminus of the cable car system at Powell Street. Watch the cable car being physically turned around on a turn-table to face the other direction. You can pay €6 dollars on board to the 'conductor' or you can purchase a 1,3 or 5 day travel pass in advance from any Tourism office. Try to get a seat on the outside if possible. The views of San Fran are just amazing! After 20-30 minutes, the cable car will bring you right down to the famous Fisherman's Wharf where you can visit the Sea Lions on Pier 32, get a boat to Alcatraz or eat in some of the fantastic restaurants.
F Tram: Alternatively, you can take an F tram from the centre of the road just down from the hotel to Fisherman's Wharf. It travels right along the Embarcado where you can get off at any pier (33 for Alcatraz, 39 for Sea Lions, shopping and restaurants).
Alcatraz: I would strongly recommend getting a boat from Pier 33 in Fisherman's Wharf over to Alcatraz. The cost is €28 dollars per person. However, in summer and during peak seasons it is advisable to book on line in advance (€28 dollars per person) to ensure that you get a place. It is very popular. The audio tour of the famous jail is excellent.
Open Top Bus: The open top bus is a great way to see the city. Some make their way around the city centre while another goes over the Golden Gate Bridge in the direction of a beautiful town called Sausalito. It's a wonderful experience to feel the wind in an open top bus as you journey over the famous bridge. The cost is between €28 - 30 dollars.
Golden Gate Bridge: As above, you can travel over the bridge on an open top bus. Alternatively, you can take a no 10 regional bus at 1st and Mission at a cost of about €5 dolloars one way to bring you over the bridge and into the town of Sausalito.
Restaurants: There are great diners close by that offer good value in American breakfasts. In particular, Tads across from the hotel offers a €7.95 full breakfast before 10.00am. For dinner, I would recommend Fog Harbour on Pier 30 in Fisherman's Wharf. The food is great and it is good value too.
Great hotel, great city. I hope you have a great trip!!!
