“Wonderful, central location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012 via mobile

We stayed five night in this wonderful, centrally located hotel in the heart of Union Square. Easy to walk to shopping, dining, and meetings scheduled throughout the city, and plenty of taxis available if we needed one.

We did find the noise from the street filtered up all the time, but we have found that to be the case at all other places we have stayed in this great city. After a bit, it just becomes background sound.

The rooms are very nice sized in the new tower that we stayed this trip. We were very lucky to have a corner room this trip, we will definitely ask for this room on our trip back next year!

“Damp hotel reminds me of The Shining”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed here in a suite with my husband and 2 toddlers. In general I don't like carpets, and there was something about this place that made us all feel damp. I know it is supposedly renovated, but we just felt slightly uncomfortable here. I understand it is a historic building and renovation, but somehow I sensed/heard gaps beneath the doors, dampness in the carpets. It is a really large hotel, very un-personalized. We had room service which passed muster. Generally we favor more modern design or boutique, smaller hotels, so please keep this in mind while reading this. We prefer the Westin Market street for this reason.

Dear Evilexis:

We appreciate you taking the time to review your most recent stay. Please allow me to apologize regarding your recent experience. It is certainly never enjoyable to understand that we have not fully exceeded any of our guest’s expectations. Please be assured that I am working directly with our housekeeping team to identify and eliminate any dampness that may have occurred through inspections in our rooms and correction protocols.

As you noted, The Westin St. Francis is a historic building, and we’re constantly looking for ways to balance preservation with modernization. Many times, our guests have a particular fondness for our Landmark Building or Tower Building, respectively. Should you plan a future stay with us, please do not hesitate to contact me in advance so I may personally assist you to ensure you will fully enjoy your accommodations.

Please let me know if there’s ever anything we can do to assist you with a future stay at The Westin St. Francis. I can be reached at 415-774-0317 or by e-mail at michael.smutzer@westin.com.

Sincerely,

“In desperate need of a makeover...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Not bad if you can get a good rate -- right in the center of the tourist district... but the hotel -- while beautifully historic, is in need of renovation. I was in the main building -- not the tower, so the tower may be better -- but rooms in the main building are old old old.. furniture is worn and carpeting stained. Really in need of a remodel.. even if it's just new fabrics. Side note: I'm super skeptical of these "Decline Maid Service to Save the Environment" programs like they have at this hotel.. particularly when they flood the place with newspapers every morning... if you're trying to conserve resources, there's gotta be a better way to do it. That said, the staff was helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Some rooms are noisy.. especially if in the front of the hotel.. also, elevators can be painfully sl...

Dear W_on_the_Road:

We appreciate your feedback regarding your most recent stay. I’m happy to hear that you found our staff to be helpful and friendly, as it is always our intention to exceed our guest’s expectations. I must agree that the Landmark Building portion of The Westin St. Francis is “beautifully historic,” so it’s with great disappointment that you found its décor and condition lacking. We’ve taken measures to address the issues you raised regarding the furniture and carpeting. As for our Make a Green Choice option to decline housekeeping service, it’s just one of our many green initiatives. The Make a Green Choice program saved an estimated 300,000 gallons of water at The Westin St. Francis last year alone.

Please let me know if there’s ever anything we can do to assist you with a future stay at The Westin St. Francis. I can be reached at 415-774-0317 or by e-mail at michael.smutzer@westin.com.

“Classic San Francisco”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Watch the historic in-room TV program about the hotel. Great historic perspective of one of California's historic hotels. I've stayed at this hotel more than any hotel in the world (300+ Nights over my lifetime).

Get a room in the "Historic" wing overlooking Union Square. The 21-series, 10-series, and 34-series rooms are the best (1221, 1021, 1121, etc.). Also the Jr. Suites are the 05- and 01-series if you want a separate small room for whatever reason. Chairman's Suite is like living in a two-story house - "off the hook" classic.

Gym is now 24/7 and has a steam room. Excellent shoe shine man with character in the lobby next to gym.

This is real San Francisco, great location for shopping and financial district. Be ready for beggars on the street asking for change - although they are pretty harmless.

Room Tip: 21-series are big, overlooking the square. Stay out of tower as it lacks character.

“Good location, but a little dingy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I stayed at the Westin St. Francis for a business trip last week. The location is very good for shopping and dining. The hotel is historic and has a lot of character.

However, I was surprised at how tiny the room was, and it was not as nice as other Westins I have stayed in. Little things, such as the vents being filthy and everything feeling a little dusty. I suppose this is because of the age of the hotel. The water in the shower did not get very hot at all, and the water pressure was low.

They charged $15/day for wireless internet and $12/day to use the workout facilities.

All in all, for the price, I would choose another hotel for my next trip.

Dear VUKY:

We appreciate your feedback regarding your most recent stay. I’m happy to hear that enjoyed our central location; some of the world’s best dining and shopping truly is just steps away.

I’ve spoken to our housekeeping staff about the level of cleanliness that you mentioned. I can assure you that your experience is not typical, and we’ve taken measures to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We’ve also had our maintenance staff adjust the water pressure and temperature.

I’m also pleased to inform you that we have recently made our WestinWORKOUT facility available at no additional charge for all guests of The Westin St. Francis.
