“THE BEST PLACE TO SPEND YOUR 50th...OR ANY OCCASION!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

This has been our favorite hotel in San Francisco for many years!!! I just spent my 50th birthday here and had an outstanding experience. Jim Gross, the General Manager of Sir Francis Drake, made our stay an exceptional one. He was extremely attentive to our needs and made sure that my 50th birthday was unforgettable. All of the staff at the Drake are friendly and helpful. The Starlight Room atop the hotel is a "the bomb"! It's the best place to view the city and dance the night away. Scala's Bistro (at the Drake), has some of the most flavorful food that we've tasted in S.F. Sir Francis Drake is located in a prime location nestled in the heart of Union Square,....you can catch a cable car right in front of the hotel..take it to China Town or down to Fisherman's Wharf. We love it here and will always come back!!!

“Average hotel but very good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This hotel looks much nicer on the website than it is in reality. We had a junior suite and it was actually quite small. so don't expect space nor a nice room full of light. it is actually pretty dark.
Also check the room before, as we had to change it given the windows were not isolating the air properly and it was freezing. (but that i guess was just bad luck, as the other room was fine)
However the hotel staff is friendly and the location is excellent.
When we were staying there the hotel's hall was always crowded and therefore it does not give you the impression of being a cozy hotel as seen on the website.

Dear Gaia G:

Thank you for posting your comments. I couldn't agree with you more on our location and the friendliness of our hotel staff!

It sounds like you might have stayed during a busy city-wide convention week, and sorry that you didn't get to enjoy the quaint atmosphere.

Hope you'll get to come and visit us soon in the near future!

“They want you to be happy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Overall I was very pleased. When booking the hotel I told them it was my anniversary and I would love an end room ;) they came through for me. The room was small but to be expected for the city. There were a few hickups with the room itself. The heater didn't work, the bathroom door didn't keep close, and the remote for the tv didn't work. My boyfriend and I still had a wonderful time, taking advantage of the front desk. They made reservations for us with an hours notice on a sat night. They even took almost half the bill off after learning about the condition of our room!

“great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Spent two nights on business and would say this is a good hotel choice. The location on Powell Street near Union Square is central and convenient to shopping and restaurants, a few blocks from Chinatown and transportation links. The room was comfortable but a little noisy (the cable car clanks by in front of the hotel). The lobby is a delight to behold with its elaborate decor. The red uniformed doormen and the front desk staff are all helpful.

Parking is expensive (valet $57 per night including tax), but public transit or taxis in San Francisco are convenient so a car is unnecessary for seeing city sights. WiFi is free if you join the Kimpton frequent guest program (free membership). There is a small exercise room but equipment is limited.

Room Tip: Some higher floor rooms have panoramic views.

Dear SaaySaay:

Thank you for leaving such a good detailed review on your recent stay with us! Need I say more. Yes, the location is perfect, very accessible to all directions by foot, bus, cab or a cable car that stops right in front of our hotel!

Our 'Beefeater' doorman is something rather symbolic when you travel to San Francisco!

Speaking of 'Panoramic View' - don't forget to visit our Starlight Room on the 21st Floor! That's where you'll find a greater view of the city!

“Great location, nice rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I stayed here for 5 nights and had a deluxe queen room on the 15th floor.. my room was really huge with a 'walk in wardrobe' space and a view of Union Square. I really liked their "conserve" initiative, as they offered $10 towards room service/their restaurant/bar for every night you chose not to have housekeeping. Many hotels offer this without any such promotion, but this is a very well thought out offer with a win-win for both sides!

However, I had two colleagues staying with me, and their rooms were much much smaller than mine (one in a deluxe king on the 10th floor and one in a standard room) so I would ring the hotel reservation line directly to see if they can reserve the best room for you!

If I were to make some suggestions, the check in desk is very hard to find when you first arrive, so they could make that clearer, and the place where you wait for the elevators is too dark and doesn't give the right type of first impression. Once you're on the 2nd floor lobby (1st floor to Europeans!) it is very cool, a nice place for a drink before dinner :)

Dear lapeltje:

I appreciate your review! As one of the Kimpton hotels, I agree with you that our 'conserve' initiative is something that I am proud to offer to our guests. I am happy to hear that you were able to take advantage of that.

Our building is one of the historical buildings in San Francisco and offer the uniqueness of its era - grandeur entrance once you walk up our stairs and more. Moreover, our reservation and front desk staff try their best to offer the guests with the best possible room, based on availability.

Lastly, but not least, I appreciate your suggestion. As we are constantly trying to improve the 'Guest Experience', I really value all comments that are given by our guests.

Hope you will visit us soon.
