“The worst 'hotel' in the developing world?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2011

Firstly, do the owners know the difference between a hostel and a hotel. I fear not - though I'm not ire of the definition myself - this most certainly is not a hotel. Surely the lack of private wash facilities, towels, tvs, curtains, pillows and all-round cleanliness is a testament to this.
All in all a terrible, terrible experience and couldnt recommend it to anyone

“Our curtain was a stained sheet”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2011

Well, i'll start with the only good thing about the place which was the price; $35 a night, $45 for two people (which was only told once they saw the secound person). Hard to find, once there poke your head into the living room of eldily Indian family, lots of shouting. First room awful, vibrates with the sound of industrial air con from chinese market downstairs. We request secound room, 5 hours later, and lots of shouting and misunderstanding, new one found. Instead of a curtain; a stained sheet. Has a tv though, no ariel. Everything filthy, good location.

“Below grade but straight forward Lodging”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

I actually stayed at the Sestri in 2002 for three months but it keeps coming to mind as a straight forward, inexpensive for the city, place to stay. I paid $175 a week which altogether was still cheaper than most rent prices in SF. Being smack dab in the middle of China town was for the most part nice as there was fruit stands and other shops like right next door. As long as you're not expecting the Hyatt going in the place is nice for the price.

“Bed Bugs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2009

The management was polite but did not disclose the super bed bugs infestation to us. We were only told when we woke up and were covered with bites from head to toe. We feel violated, the hotel is telling us there is nothing they can do. I do not believe this.

“Great Budget Hotel in a Perfect Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2007

I have stayed at the Sestri Hotel for months at a time when I'm in San Francisco. It is owned/managed by a very kind and helpful family who go out of their way to repair/take care of any problems. The place is very clean and completely bug-free and the showers and toilets in the women's room have recently been renovated and are now quite nice. Ask for the quiet side of the hotel when you book and you will find the noise level quite low. The beds are comfortable and you can request a chair, a dresser, or a small table if you like.

As the rest of the reviewers have said, you couldn't ask for a prettier, more convenient or safer neighborhood--it's the border between Chinatown and the Italian neighborhood of North Beach. Lots of historic coffee houses and the famous City Lights Bookstore, and pretty Washington Square park within a few minutes walk, excellent restaurants, fruit & veggie stands, and even an organic market 5 minutes away. Almost in front of the hotel is a bus stop which will take you straight to Union Square, Bart Stations, and the other way to Fisherman's Wharf, Union Street (Cow Hollow) and other scenic spots. Do yourself a favor, save a lot of money and stay here!!
