“A Great Place to Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We are a family of 4 adults and we stayed here for 3 nights from the 26th Dec. It is a great place to stay as it is only a few blocks from Union Square. The hotel staff were very welcoming, the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The decor was lovely and full of character due to the fact that it is an old hotel. Breakfast was great with enough of a selection to satisfy us all.
The rate is very reasonable and if you want to be closer to Union Square and in a modern up- market hotel then expect to pay a whole lot more.
There are homeless people outside but they are harmless and do not bother you. We all felt very safe here.
We had a 2 bedroom room and it was perfect for us. The noise outside did not stop any of us from sleeping but if you are a light sleeper, use earplugs and remember that you are in the middle of a city!
I would definately stay here again and highly recommend it to you.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher up as is the case in any city hotel.

“Good Deal”

After a very long drive, and getting lost trying to find the hotel, getting a cold shot of Tequila at the front desk was just a great way to start our stay. I have stayed an many hotels within a block of here and this was by FAR the best. Nice, breakfast included. Of course it is an older place, but was charming. Our room had nice decorations, the bathroom was old but clean and in good repair and had enough room in it. Overall I enjoyed this Hotel by far more than any other I have stayed at in the area. The staff could not have been more helpful.

“Hotel was acceptable but had some serious problems here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

First i will say that the room was nice for an old hotel. the location was just ok. It is ab out 4 blocks to Union Square. i would have liked to be a little closer. Now for the problem we experienced. Upon check-in, the clerk checked us in under the wrong reservation just because it was the same last name (why do they ask for ID if they are not going to read it). We did not know this at the time and the clerk did not catch it. On the last night of our stay, we talked to another clerk about arranging transportation to the airport and he said that we weren't due to check out yet. After some time, he just changed the check out date. STILL THEY DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE NAME WAS WRONG. On the morning of our checkout, I was presented with a bill for $745.00. My trip was booked and prepaid through Priceline, so I knew this was incorrect (not to mention that my rate was half of this), but I didn;t have time to argue with the clerk because we had an early plane to catch. Upon returning home I found that the hotel had in fact charged my card for $745.00. To make a long story short, it took Best Western and the hotel 2 weeks to get me a refund. Regardless of how much I complained, I was not given anything other than a "we're sorry" for them holding my money for 2 weeks. They offered me a few free points on their points program which i was not even a member of. what they offered did not even add up to a free night. In my eyes, the hotel owed me a week stay at a Best Western property for putting me through the problems I encountered by therm incorrectly holding my money for 2 weeks. This is a situation that affected me financially and they did not care about that. I will definitely be boycotting Best Western hotels in the future. If you stay at this particular hotel, be careful of the front desk staff. They seem to have a serious competence problem.

“Haven't had that spirit here since 1969...”

Only here one night - but enjoyed it. Parking is way expensive if you need that. Room was adequately sized and spotlessly clean. Cute decor. Hotel has charm and is close to some fun restaurants. Mostly quiet but some sirens at night... The bedding was soft and comfy. Free breakfast not too exciting but hey. There is a restaurant on site that looked good tho we didn't eat there.

However the best part is the free shot of Tequila on check in!

“mixed bag, some good some not”

Recently stayed again at this Best Western hotel in San Francisco. My review is not one of being too critical but I really need to be fair about the entire review. I have stayed here now 3 times, more recent in January and back in December. This most recent stay was for 2 nights so I could attend a wine festival. The rooms are decent to fairly nice, clean and comfortable. Breakfast is slightly better than average, seen better and seen worse from BW hotels. The location is very good right near Union Square and is walkable from the Bart Station Powell St. Close to theatres, restaurants, cable car line, and nightclubs. The negatives you should be aware of, is that on Geary and Powell St. there are many, many beggers hitting you up for cash and there are the street people who sleep in the sidewalks and doorway entries so the sights and smells are not pleasant. This hotel borders Geary St. and both on Geary and behind is a significant amount of street noise so if you are a somewhat light sleeper beware, the sirens from emergency vehicles and the crowds at the bar venues will be noisy till the clubs close around 2:00A.M. and since this is an older hotel the single pane glass windows does not cover up the noise factor. Most of the staff I have encountered are pleasant and helpful. And if you are driving a car beware the $31.00 nightly parking charge will greatly increase your nightly stay total, and the valet takes approximate 20 minutes to retreive your car as it may be parked down the street, not the adjacent garage. Overall I rate this hotel in a mostly positive manor, but there are enough negatives for me to consider another hotel that may be quieter and parking cost competitive when I book again.
