“In the middle of a renovation... but overall good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

This hotel has a split personality. Part of the decor is very old fashioned and part is very modern.
We arrived in advance of a conference and check-in was easy though the rooms were not ready. Our requests as far as room location and bed configuration were honored.
The hotel is massive - there were over 1000 at our conference and even more people in the hotel. I had an older Tower 1 room which was decent, but the shower had hardly any water pressure at all.
A co-worker had a new Tower 3 room which was very sleek and modern. It did feel smaller than my room and did not have a bathtub.
Lobby has a Starbucks - very busy on conference mornings. Urban Tavern restaurant was good and had a varied menu.
Room service was overpriced and underwhelming. A meatball slider order came with two small, squishy meatloaf pieces on two soggy buns. No fries, or anything else. Explore the area - there are enough restaurants within a two block radius.
Internet is free in the lobby so it's usually packed with people. Not free the in rooms.
I would NOT have paid the regular rate to stay at this hotel. It was more than $300 a night, and I did not see the value. Location is the main perk for this hotel but I see that change is coming so maybe after the renovation is complete, I'll try again.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay overall. We are in the middle of a large scale renovation, and many of the inconsistencies you experienced will be smoothed out by April 2012. Our location is the best, with easy access to shopping, first-class dining, and many of our cities fun attractions. When traveling on business, you often do not have much time between meetings to see the city. So, being close to Union Square, Chinatown, the Cable Cars, and Nob Hill, makes site seeing easy! Our lobby restaurant is the best choice when you have very little time, the menu is varied and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. We thank you for choosing to stay at the Hilton Union Square while in San Francisco, and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Brian at the Hilton honors desk was amazing! Very helpful and kind. Pool was closed but we got to swim at hotel Nikko. The front doormen were not that great. They never once opened doors for us but that is my only complaint. Cleanliness I gave a 4 just because prior tenant or maid left a washcloth wrapped around the bathroom light. I assume to dim the light but I am glad my 7 year old pointed it out to me a day into our trip. The washcloth was burned by then and could have started a fire if we didn't find it. However the stay was exceptional. I have never been disappointed with the Hilton family hotels!

“Pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I stayed at the Hilton SF/Union Square for a few days for a business conference. They had more than one large conference going on and I must say, everything went smoothly. The good points of my stay: quick check in, nice bath amenities (Peter Roth, lovely), good water pressure in the shower, a comfy bed, quick elevators (even though it's a pretty big hotel), and a good central location with an easy walk from the BART (which I took from SFO, a very easy ride). Also, if you have limited time to get out during these conferences (which is often the case), there is great shopping and nice places to stroll and hang out within a few blocks of the hotel. One negative - I could hear voices, even in normal speaking tones, very clearly in the hallway at all hours from inside my room. Luckily, there were no party-ers on my floor :). The catering for our event was good - good choices for continental breakfast, and very fast service for our large awards luncheon. Overall - good stay, good location, I would recommend!

Wow! Thank you so much for the glowing review. We are so happy that you had a pleasant stay and a successful conference. We do apologize for the noise, as part of our renovation we are addressing the noise level by improving the windows, walls, and doors. This will decrease the amount of noise you can hear from the street, room to room, and in the hallways. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the comfort of our amenities and the convenience of our location, and were able to enjoy the city. We look forward to welcoming you back as our guests again & again.

“Good Value for area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I came to stay at this hotel as part of a conference. Out of the options available for my conference and checking nearby hotels not part of the conference, this hotel is a good value for the price. The location is in the financial district but on the border of a not so nice area. It is a good location to walk to different places nearby and to get to the BART. Also, the hotel is a short walk to the cable cars if you want to a nice ride up to Fisherman's wharf.

The hotel room itself was average. The bathroom was a bit outdated. I was on the top floor with a view of the hotel pool which can get quite noisy if children are playing in the pool. There was also a persistent sound that I relate to hearing an automatic garage door opening and closing at all times was heard from my room. I know my room was a couple doors down from their service elevator and the smell of garbage was drafting down the hall during my stay. One of the ice machines close to my room was not working which isn't a big deal but I thought I'd mention.

There is a Starbucks and restaurant/bar as part of the hotel. I would recommend if you're here for a conference, avoid the hotel starbucks (hilton honors club members receive free certificates to starbucks which makes it really busy in the mornings). There is another Starbucks down a block....or try the Boudin's down a couple of blocks for a more San Francisco experience.

The service was as expected. The staff tried to reduce the lines at check in and tried to help different requests. Their emergency guest toiletries (spare toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) was a bit sparse but there is a convenient store across the street.

The gym is adequate with updated machines and weights. This hotel does have a Supershuttle stop outside with vans leaving frequently without having to make a reservation. It also is not difficult to get a taxi from this location.

I guess I expected more from this Hilton chain but it was a fine, average experience.

Room Tip: Try to get a room not facing the pool.

“Superior Customer Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

This Hilton was a pleasant surprise. I was greeted in a friendly manner by virtually every employee that I saw - from security guards to bellmen to maids. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there. Huge plus for their service. The hotel's location is great if you want to be near Union Square. BART is 2 blocks away, so save the $50 cab fare from the airport and take BART for about $5. Rooms are small, as you should expect in any big city downtown property, but the bed was very comfortable, the views spectacular, and the bathroom fine (though small as well). Regarding street noise - you will hear things periodically, but you are in the city, not on a deserted island. I found it to be a non-issue. Lobby offered free wi-fi - free throughout the property would be much better, but by comparison, many hotels in similar classes do not even offer free lobby access, so I'll take it. Overall, a great stay.
