Although this decidedly overpriced, faded Rodeway property is in a convenient area ON THE MAP, had we been thinking, we would have looked harder for another lodging to reserve. To be fair, we knew the neighborhood was not high end, but we were attracted by free parking, and included breakfast. After a long day's ride down the lovely CA coast, we were longing for showers, food and rest. We arrived at the hotel, pulled up outside the dim and unwelcoming parking entry and Hubby and son went in search of the not clearly indicated office. Upon entering, the female worker , without greeting nor eye contact demanded a reservation and ID. Not ever raising her eyes, she barked when she did not see the proffered card...and when asked for information, gave unintelligable replies. She was so rude my son actually left the office to get away from her. Hubby was then informed that there was no off street parking available for us that night and that we would have to arise at 7 am to feed meters on the street...so we began to remove everything from the inside of our van because the homeless will break in even for a pillow. Just as we discovered that we needed to reposition our nearly empty vehicle because it was too far into the no parking area, a man with a little child in his arms came up and informed us brusquely that we could not park the way we were. At my equally brusque "we ARE moving!" reply he enjoined that I needn't be rude , he was trying to be helpful. Come to find out, this casually dressed, child carrying passerby is the manager. OH. We were nonplussed and tired and travel worn. There was grumping from the peanut gallery. As we struggled with our key card, baggage and the dark garage interior, to get in to the cramped dingy access to the ( broom closet sized) elevator and stair, the manager shouted out to my husband to come to the office. There he was informed that if we were unhappy we could cancel our stay free of charge. No offer of help to get our extra bags upstairs. No list of parking garages ( of which there are several closeby) to put our plainly never going to fit in the narrow and dark confines of the parking garage van. Very rude, very unprofessional, and very unwelcoming folks, these managers.
The room was surprisingly clean, unsmelly, and roomy. The sheets and towels were quite worn but adequate for our needs.
We just about died laughing over the free continental breakfast. A limp prepackaged bakery item, juice and coffee in the closet sized office. To fetch and carry back to the room. On which continent is this breakfast? We stayed at Marriot and Hilton properties FOR LESS PER NIGHT with more amenities. Truly not value for money with rude managers as well. A letter to the Rodeway chain is in the works.
Again, it would not have been so bad if they had professional demeanors in the office.
