Let me run this down real quick without making this into a review about staying in fisherman's wharf instead the hyatt. All the really nice hotels are not in the wharf even brands like the top chains their locations down here are lacking, not special, old, dirty etc.. The wharf is not lets spend everyday for a week there place anyway... theres a day or day and half of stuff to do and see there and thats it. then you will driving, cabbing or trolleying around the different areas of the city that are actually more appealing. Taking a bus tour is a good way to get a grasp of where you want to spend time. ok... sorry. To the Hyatt... When i'm traveling and staying at what i think will be a nice hotel i want to have the "this is nice" feeling when i walk in the lobby and the room. Anything can happen from there based on luck really. But, if you don't start with that you're in trouble. Pulling up to a small hard to locate, small cove of a drive entry there was no valet in sight. ok.. maybe getting a car, but you should have more than one just because of that. after getting out my own bags, then standing there for about 5 minutes here he comes and looks at me like i am going to go park it myself. So i "talk him into valeting the car" then i wrestle my bags(heavy) into the very small lobby(i thought it was the concierge desk). i booked a king standard room, i have someone that would prefer to sleep in the bed with me like normal. Well that was to much to ask and they could only put me in a two bed room(not queens) i'm talking small beds. keep in mind i booked a king. its beautiful view of the brick wall was amazing... the beds were decent to sleep in, by decent i don't mean great. I hindsight its amazing what kind of night sleep you can get in your own bed at night. lol. In the morning i went and looked at the breakfast, knowing how service is so far and decided to skip a 50 dollar breakfast and go get food in the wharf. smart choice plenty to pick from whenever. checking out i was going to stop and complain but said why bother.. so getting off the elevator to get into the lobby and i have two 60 lbs bags, then there is these three steep stairs to actually get on to the lobby floor out right out of the elevator, no ramp.. so i a wrestle the bags up the stairs(ok not ny first time), but the point there are bell hops watching me do it. didn't move a muscle, then when i got to them " is there anything i can help you with"? (yes please get fired, is what i thought). then back out to the valet where asking for your car is like asking for then to help you move two states away. same attitude as when i got there. I am always an over tipper even when my better half says to give them a bad tip. I don't believe in no tip, so i gave him 50 cents. I hoped it woke him up a bit, to see is worth.
Stay downtown... trolley to the sites and the wharf. A mistake is to think staying there is in the heart of the action or sites its not just one. If you really want to stay down there save the money and go for a hampton/fairfield level hotel free breakfast at those places and will be just as nice as their parent hotel.
