I stayed at the Handlery only because the city was booked solid for a large convention. The rates were high due to the convention, but I think normal rates are more reasonable. The third floor of the hotel, where I stayed is dated - think old heavily painted woodwork and glass knobbed doors - but clean and the furniture and bed were modern and comfortable. Union Square of course is very busy - access to streetcars, cable cars and other transportation is very good here. Restaurants are touristy here, go to Chinatown, North Beach and other neighborhoods for better food. There are many street performers in the area, but also significant homeless presence and lots of begging. The hotel staff was courteous and helpful. Beware of wifi charges for each device - try to negotiate free wifi when you reserve your room. I'm coming back for a week with my family next month and if the value is better then, this will be a possibility for us.
