I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Carriage Inn - San Francisco May 11 but I have read that theere have been some renovations done since then. i thought it was a great hotel, the rooms are very interesting and each has a theme so a little different. There is no restaurant and breakfast is minimal but there are places to eat nearby so no big deal. Advantages are the cost, very close to Union Square and the cable car and it has a carpark underneath which was handy as I had a hire car. The staff were friendly and the place was clean. Room had a great bathroom and all the facilities you need.

I used the Best Western chain many times during a driving trip through California and Nevada. I found them always to be good quality and reasonably priced. Most had laundry facilites which was handy. Breakfast normally included. Basic but all you need.

Attended MacWorld last week & spent 4 nights here. We chose it for the walking distance to the Moscone center and on site parking (and price). The room (Ken Keesey) was quite large so that was nice for a long stay. Very clean and nicely appointed, good bed. Service was friendly and helpful. Wished for more ice machines! Neighborhood has some troubled folks and such but we expected that. Wifi was good but you have to keep logging in :-(

All in all fit our needs and budget.

pros: they provide a small continental breakfast in the morning, which was nice. had some pretty good muffins.. i stayed in the room called "big bertha". rooms are nicely decorated and staff are very friendly.
parking is only $20 which is good, cuz most hotels in San Fran area are minimum $40

cons: hotel is rather small so not many ammenities.. supposedly there's a pool at the best western across the street that you can see, but its is a little annoying to have to walk across the street. hotel is located in a slightly shady area. be careful when walking home at night. there are a lot of homeless ppl and drunks around the area late at night. i walked back to the hotel with 2 friends around 12:30am from union square and the walk was not the safest. wifi at the hotel is free, but doesn't work most of time.. was incredibly slow when it worked, and half the time would only work for like 15 mins at a time.

would be 4 stars if located in a better area, had better internet

Nicely appointed rooms for the price - nice and close to Market Street. Didn't eat here so can't comment - plenty of food places in the surrounding blocks though.
