“Good Value!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

Great location near busses and trains. Easy to get there from the airport by train or bus (cheaper). Staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful giving travel options (bus, train or trolley) including costs. Free computer use. Breakfast and kitchen OK. No TV in common room. Good security except no lockers. Excellent value.

Room Tip: The fewer people (4 rather than 6), the better the sleep quality (less snoreing possibilities)

“Only if on very tight budget”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

The place is really cheap considering it's earshot to everything in downtown SFO. The street outside gets a little dodgy starting sundown, was walking towards the place and come across a man getting restrained by a couple of cops. There is no lift/elevator so not really great if bringing heavy stuff. The rooms and the place in general are a little smelly and not very clean. Staff was very helpful and managed to get us the most comfortable room (there were 3 of us, we were supposed to be separated but they managed to find a room for us). Would only recommend if you are on a very tight budget. Not planning to stay there again.

“Great location, good price”

The locaton is great. The most Tourist attractions, shopping center, cinema & cable car station are in walking distance.

The staff and the people there were nice.

But there's just 1 shower next to the kitchen (a small room behind the kitchen), just 1 toilet for every floor WITHOUT a lavabo (just Disinfecting gel)! In the room was a lavabo.

If you need just a bed for the night then it's a good choice. But if you want enjoy the hostel, you should look for another hostel.

“Better pay a few more for a better stay.”

Location is good but a bus driver told me Ellis St. gets dangerous from Taylor St. to the west at night. People get mugged, raped, shot... as tourist you wouldn't imagine cause it's almost in front of the Hilton!
Hostel smells bad, food sucks, bedrooms are dirty (including quilts which I really didn't like). People is nice and it's cheap.

“Good for party, cheap, not good for sleep or food.”

Located on the edge of the Tenderloin and Financial district, this location is good if you are traveling with someone else or are okay with being bothered by crack dealing hobos. Luckily (in some ways) I'm used to dealing with crack heads and hobos so this didn't bother me at all, but was rather entertaining. Overall, decently located in downtown.

The place is pretty crusty, not terrible though. It's like staying at your cousins dirty party house. The problem with San Francisco is that every hotel and hostel is expensive, so This place, $60 a night for a private room, was the cheapest place we could find. It smelled funny, and there were (apparently) no quiet hours, as there was loud singing, and instrument playing well past 2am. I like to be fair, so I'll say that the people working there were chill, not eager to help but nice. Stoned. The free breakfast? Old bread and jam, coffee, NO MORE. Not even butter. Also, don't expect to find parking anywhere if you have a car for under $25.

So, if you want a good time staying up late and partying and a cheap stay and like to eat out, this place is for you. If you want a free breakfast, and are street unwise and just want to sleep after midnight, don't come here.
