Having lived in San Francisco during my grad school days, I learned long ago that much of the charm of the city is in its varied neighborhoods. So on the end of a recent business trip, I booked a weekend stay at this delightful inn.
Denise and Bill run the B and B out of their restored farmhouse in the Pacific Heights/Fillmore neighborhood, one of the city's trendiest and most fun, but without the scene craziness of other hot spots. Think of it as the West Village in NYC with hills.
There are three rooms, all former artists's studios (hence the name). They're big, airy, light and comfy. Down comforters, crisp white sheets (line dried, no less!) and room to relax. And even though you're on a busy street, you won't hear anything because the rooms are set back in a courtyard filled with orchids, wisteria and succulents, the perfect spot to unwind after a day's adventuring. Breakfasts are great---fresh baked goodies from the neighborhood bakery, granola, coffee, fruits.
If you need to be steps from the bustle of the Wharf, Union Square or downtown, this is probably not the spot for you. But if you like staying in a really local neighborhood with delightful shops, cutting edge cuisine and ambience, it's perfect. The city's excellent bus system will take you anywhere in a short time---I got to the Marina, the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown and the Alcatraz ferry all on local transit. And if, like me, you miss your furry babies, there's a great rescue shelter, Pets Unlimited, up on Fillmore. You can visit the animals to your heart's content.
I can't wait till I can go back to the Artists's Inn! There is so much of the city beyond the usual touristy spots. This is a great way to discover it (and it can be a wonderful romantic getaway too).
