I stayed at this motel because I love the location and because it was inexpensive for SF ($82 incl. taxes, and free parking). I had stayed there a couple times several years ago when the furnishings were on par with Motel 6 and the carpets were worn out, and it has been redone since then, but overall the condition of all of the most important items was terrible and I wouldn't stay there again.
*The bed was large and flat (firm), but the sheets were too small for the bed and did not cover the mattress even when it had just been made! As soon as you sat down they popped off, and over the night you end up with your body in contact with the mattress (YUK!). The sheets also had holes and someone else's hair.
*The toilet was one of the first-edition Low Flow that will not flush even one piece of TP the first flush. For those certain times, it would take a good 10 flushings while watching everything swirl around and waiting for the water to fill up. Gross!
*The only lights in the main part of the room are on one of those motion detectors that turn off if you are not moving. So if you got up in the middle of the night and wanted to turn on the light, you had to stumble over to the wall switch and pound on the thing to get it to turn on, and then go back to the bedside lamp and turn it on (having turned it off before going to sleep). What is really classic, and indicative of the care put into this motel, is that the digital clock was plugged into this same outlet. So the clock is either OFF or BLINKING 12:00.
*The towels were GRAY and had holes in them. What was really shocking is that there was one washcloth that was white, and the contrast of the gray towels was disgusting.
*All of the caulking around the inside and the outside of the tub had rotted away, and was replaced with mold and mildew. It was also growing along the bottom of the shower curtain.
*The shower stopped being hot much before my shower was over, and it's not because anyone else was using it.
*Bathroom was really small - only wide enough for the toilet. Sink was outside in the other arm of the "L".
*We stayed two nights (having made plans in that part of the city), and there was only one other couple in the entire motel. They left a sign on the window "No Vacancy - Reservations Only", and kept the office all closed up. However, we found there is actually someone in there hiding around the corner where they can watch you walking through the parking garage but you can't see them. The whole thing was just weird, and I got the feeling the motel was a "front" for something else going on there.
If someone else took it over, I would stay there again because there are some good things about it:
*The rooms are big, and we had a room on the end of the building that was L-shaped and bigger than the others. It had a desk instead of round table and 2 chairs that the smaller rooms had. Some rooms have a couch.
*It is so nice to walk outside and get on the train, and I like watching it go by and go around the roundabout at the end of the road. It comes every 10 minutes, making it very easy to get around in the city. You can get off it and catch a bus or cab anywhere else. The downside is if you have a room facing Judah Street, you hear its squeaking breaks and little bell constantly all day because there is always one coming and one going.
*Java Beach Cafe is right next door, one of my favorites. Such a nice atmosphere and light food.
*There's a new cafe on the other corner with Soul Food, and it is also very good. Or, you can take the train down a few blocks and there is every other type of restaurant.
*Being right next to the beach and the beach trail. (I am pretty sure none of the rooms actually has an "oceanview" because the sand dunes block the view). We walked out in the rain to watch the surfers, and took a little stroll on the paved trail along the Great Highway with our coffee. So nice! However, the frontage road along the Great Highway is all people that live in their vehicles and other homeless. The motel seems tucked away from this and I don't think they would come into the parking garage, but they are there. The Great Highway Inn around the corner is much more exposed to this.
*The fridge, microwave and heat worked!
Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the parking lot (not facing Judah St) if you don't want to hear the train...
