The place is different - kind of like a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel or inn. The staff people are great - friendly and helpful. The rooms, while small and a bit old-fashioned, were certainly adequate. I had never stayed in that area of SF before, and found Hayes Valley to be a fun place. There is a little beer garden near by and a variety of restaurants and stores along Hayes Street. The communal bathrooms (2) and shower (1) on my floor were conveniently-located and clean. Hot water was plentiful. There was a sink in our room. Cookies are available in the afternoon and night. Continental breakfast is available after 7AM. There's a little sitting area that's cozy, with pamphlets and books. Parking is a bit difficult, as the lot nearby charges $15 and allows in and out parking, but at noon, there were no free spaces. We parked on the street, came back an hour later, and found one free spot. There is a little bit of street parking if you search, but I'm not sure how long you can park there without a resident parking permit - 2 hours, I believe.
The street noise on the front of the hotel was a little bit of problem, so if you think that will bother you, ask for a quiet room. Also, there's no elevator, and you must go up stairs to get to the office and rooms, so keep that in mind if you aren't up for stair climbing. Overall, we found it a funky and fun place to stay, with some public buses near by, and easy access in the morning to 101 and the route to the airport. The bed was comfy; the staff (and dog) were great, and the area interesting. We had lunch at the crepe place next door (pretty good) and dinner at the Grove (on Hayes, near by - pretty good). We had a queen bed, room 104. The next time we visit I will probably go back to my old favorite (Cow Hollow Motor Inn), but for a cheaper, different, homey alternative, this place suited us just fine for an 18 hour stopover between a long flight from Beijing to the U.S. and continuing home to Washington DC. For SF, it was reasonably-priced, too!
