“This place is the pits!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011 via mobile

I have done a lot of travelling in my time & this is the worst hostel I have ever stayed at!

My husband & I booked a private room as a last minute thing for $70, this didn't include an ensuite.

Check in was fine, young girl at front desk was friendly & polite. Got to our room which took us about five mins to manipulate door open. The room was small, filthy looking bed with sheet & filthy looking bed cover. I wanted to check out straight away but as it was late my husband convinced me to stay the night & find something else. One plus was that there was a brand new sink to brush our teeth in.

I went down the hall to use the bathroom & that was even more hideous. The bathrooms are uni-sex & just disgusting. Urine stains on seat, black stains on bath where we were supposed to shower & no sink to wash hands except some anti septic hand wash. No thanks!

Thankfully we went for a quick walk that evening and found some cute little hotel for only $80 a night, this included your own private bathroom, basic breakfast & wifi.

Needless to say we were packed up early without showering & were on our way.

I didn't even bother looking at the remainder of the hostel. Apparently they have free beer but would prefer a clean place than free booze!

“Very average hostel for the price.”

Given that the price is quite high in terms of hostel pricing, this was a very average experience.

The building is old and not very well maintained - the room was musty with dirty carpet and stained chairs. Also there were bed bugs in the bed - so gross! The bathroom (we had a double room with ensuite) was pretty dirty as well with clogged plugholes.

Two redeeming factors are: a really good central location downtown and friendly staff who are at the desk 24hrs. They also have a "nightclub" in the basement where they sometimes have free beer, or you can bring your own alcohol. Very weird, but kinda cool if you want to meet other travellers/have a cheap night.

“HORRIBLE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

LOOK.. i have stayed in many places:
This place is the WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER STAYED IN.
IF you are a basic backpacker that does not care whatsoever about elemental hygene, and are planning to be absolutley drunk whilst here..then I recommend this place. However, if you are a normal human being and expect clean sheets, and not pubes stuck to walls and absolutley filthy carpet that trust me you can SMELL has NEVER BEEN CLEANED..and just a HORRID room full of bed bugs, then you will not want to stay here. Dont spend your money here. The people running this place would NEVER pass a health inspection..absolutley never. And i will be complaining. Because since I have been back I have had rashes all over my body. I just cant believe that people can get away with a place like this.

try other hostels, we saw other nice ones whilst there. The bathrooms have full hairs in sink, and half eaten food everywhere..it was just a nightmare. ANY place should at least have clean sheets and not sheets filled with stains, and all different old sheets that had never been washed. A complete disguiting example of a hostel. Apalled.

Oh and if you see good reviews..TRUST me its because the writers are proably backpackers (that are prob 16 and have never left home) and were absiolutley drunk and looking to party and they stayed here because they got free beer. BIG excitement..beer is like 5 bucks..go buy some and stay somwhere descent. Thats all

“A TOTAL HORROR!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

Sheets of the bed with wandering pubic hair, stained carpet, peeling walls, loose electric cords and a shower clogged with hair and scum: that's what I found when I open the door of my room 205. I wish I can send to the Health Department and post here the pictures I took as it is unbelievable. When I get down, back to the office, I was said by the obnoxious employee that it must have been a mistake and that they would graciously agree to check me in another "clean" room. No apologies, just a sigh of exasperation. I discussed 5 min, no way to get a refund, "that's not our policy". As my voice was getting louder, another older employee (manager?) came behind the desk and start to speak very loudly to other customers, in an obvious way to try to mask the situation. Everything was so childish, irresponsible and ridiculous that I left without even getting back my deposit. I went straight to the Nob Hill Motor Inn I found via Expedia and FOR THE EXACT SAME AMOUNT ($100) I got a 1500 square feet of cleanliness, with HBO, free wifi, free coffee. Be aware and make your choice!

“Quite possibly the worst hostel ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

A great weekend trip to San Francisco was almost ruined by the absolutely horrendous hostel experience at 140 mason street. As we were all paying $45 dollars each for the room a grand total of $135 between us I was expecting something half decent for hostel standards. The reality was that it was the worst hostel that I have ever stayed in. The room was filthy, the sheets were dirty the sink looked like a biology experiment and there was half an eaten pizza on the window edge. The staff were initially friendly, although they would not address the issues that we raised, all they would talk about was the free beer at the bar in the evening. Perhaps if they handed out less free beer and concentrated there money elsewhere then the hostel may get the clean up and face lift in so desperately needs. A terrible place, look elsewhere

Room Tip: go elsewhere, this place is worth $20 max
