“A nice small, quaint hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2012 NEW

My wife and I stayed at the Nob Hill Hotel for two nights and we loved it. We reserved the Garden Suite which had two separate rooms, one living room and one bedroom, including a small patio outside and a jacuzzi in the bathroom. The decoration and overall look of the place was very old-fashioned, if you're into that sort of thing, and it was very clean. There is a fitness room, but it is a bit of a joke. It's more like a fitness closet with one treadmill and some dumbbells. However, we did not come to the hotel to exercise we came to relax and experience San Francisco. The location was good because it was within walking distance of Union Square and close to downtown, however if you want to go to the piers or the GG Bridge, you should either drive or take public transportation. The hotel does have a restaurant that is attached to it and they offer complimentary continental breakfast which was on par as in any hotel, but at night the restaurant is fully functional and serves Italian dishes at a competitive price, comparably. The valet was a good investment and I recommend it as the easiest means of storing a vehicle in this part of San Francisco. Overall, I plan on staying there in the near future as I enjoyed every minute while I was there.

“Smelly, Dowdy and Odd: Your Crazy Grandma's Chic Boutique Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2012 NEW

I just spent 6 nights here, primarily on business.

One word: No.

I give it two stars for: 1. Good, not great, location. And 2. Very good staff.

I actually feel bad writing this review, because having spent almost a week there, I did grow to appreciate the staff, some of whom are great by any standard. But sometimes the truth hurts--both hearing it AND telling it.

Now the down and dirty:

1. Unkempt: In DESPERATE need of repair. I couldn't discern the original color of the carpeting it was so worn. My toilet sometimes flushed, sometimes it didn't. Worn linens inspired nightmares (and I hope only nightmares) of vicious insects attacking me.

2. TINY rooms: This place makes your Parisian B&B feel like an airline hangar. I couldn't fully open my suitcase anywhere in the room. Literally. I had a window bench, which I could barely get to. And a shelf in the entry way, narrowing an already narrow passage. Definitely not a place to get any work done.

3. Weird: I LOVE character. But this place lost me at hello. A schizophrenic melange of the worst of the old world and the worst of some other world I could not begin to comprehend, I was, for the first time outside of a war zone, a little freaked out. Had Norman Bates repressed his irrepressible urge to murder his mother, this I imagine is what their city establishment might look like.

4. Bad bed: Lumpy and uneven. Unpleasant.

5. SLOW Wifi: Yes, it's free. But here, you get what you pay for. Forget about it if you need to download or upload anything of significance.

6. Few amenities: There's supposedly a fitness room. There's a little restaurant, which I didn't go to and which does look like it could be nice. But not a whole lot else. That didn't bother me as the neighborhood has plenty to offer.

This booking was my final experiment with Travelocity's "Top Secret Hotels." Let me let you in on a little secret: There's a reason why they're secret.

That said, I had safe, if not a little odd, accommodation. Staff was nice and helpful. Location was good. I wouldn't stay there again, if given a choice. But if you're concerned about value and location, and you don't need space to work, it's adequate.

And judging from other reviews, some people actually like the "style". To each his or her own.

“Beautifully appointed hotel and rooms, from a bygone era.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2012

We enjoyed the hotel, and the uniqueness of the room that we stayed in, and the others that we got a peak of. The many paintings were fun to look at as well. The modern amenities looked out of place in the room, but are nice to have. The hotel is several blocks off of Van Ness, so it is relatively quite for the city, but had quite a few nice restaurants in the area. Overall, I had a great experience and look forward to our next visit.

“A place like this should not even exist.”

I'll keep this review as short an clear as possible. This hotel is a health hazzar. The rooms are moldy and not clean at all.

I was moved twice from room to room and it got worst and wosrt. I'm allergic to mold and dust and I got really sick to the point I needed to leave the hotel right away.

I booked another hotel within two hours and when I got back they charged me for the full night althought the room was a rat hole and I expressed my health concerns.

I have been in hotels all over the place and I found better places in second and third world countries. Please stay away of such a nasty place.

Service was awful and not very polite. They claimed to have really high standards for cleaning and treated me disrispecfully when i disagreed.

This place is also in the worst area of SF called the tenderloin. This is not the way people should remember such a beautiful city.

There are tons of hotels in San Francisco that for $20 more a night really this place is not a good value unless your ideal vacation is getting sick and walking around the most creepy peole in the town.
