The chancellor has character and clues to its history however it's a bit cramped/dated. The rooms appear to have had a recent makeover and they look a lot better for it. Our room was a bit on the small side as was the bathroom which made me feel a little claustrophobic, I spent most of the time in the room standing looking out at the back street view. The bed was very comfortable, the room cool due to air conditioning, the bathroom had cute looking 1920's features but was incredibly small. We are both nearing 6ft.
Reception staff were friendly but not overly, the chambermaids were more friendly and did a great job, the room was cleaned to a high standard and had all the amenities you would require apart from a fridge. We had a safe, TV etc but no tea/coffee making facilities, there was however free coffee in reception 24hrs a day and also some biscuits.
The location of the hotel was what made it, right on union square and across from many bars/restaurants/shops.. basically everything on your door step. I stayed in Fisherman's Wharf last time but never again. If I had to choose another place to stay it would definitely be in Union Square but maybe not here which is a shame because it was only the "small" details that let it down.
Ask for a square view possibly on a high floor, the back view is depressing. Opt for a night out the...

Our character and history, along with our excellent location, are the best features of hotel and the reason people love us. They did things differently 100 years ago which gives us the character. If we changed things to be "new" we would lose the history and character - thus we have no plans to do that.

Yes, the bathrooms are small - real small! The toilet is tight and has the pressure flush, but that is how we are. The bathrooms are not the way I would prefer it, but I enjoy experiencing things that are historical and different even when they are not necessarily the way I would like it to be. That is the charm of it. That is why I like to travel to different places - to try different things but go back home and appreciate my life and time.
I am not really sure what the small details were that were the let down, but I do have some good news:
We are in the process of upgrading our hair driers - taking them off the walls and putting them in little bags hanging on the door.
While we do have refrigerators available on request, we are putting them in the rooms so it will be there and ready.
We also just upgraded our lobby coffee to Douwe Egbert European brand coffee served out of a machine fresh so it will always be hot. The water for our tea is also dispensed hot out of the machine so no more warm water out of the air pots!
