“After a decade - STILL my favorite place on earth”

We've stayed at Kahana Sunset at least 10 times. Early on, the "F" building was our favorite because of the steps to the ocean and our younger children. Recent changes (thanks to the ocean) caused the condo owners to wall off the steps from F building. These units are still grand, but with married children and the changes, building "A" is my favorite. A-10 is our unit of choice, being on the end and having windows on the side looking at a garden as well as the lanai and upper deck.

Kahana Sunset has 2 types of units, 1 or 2 bedrooms. Building A has only 2 bedrooms with 1400 sq feet, 2.5 baths, and full kitchen/washer-dryer. Kitchen has been nicely refinished and is fully equipped. The units here are individually owned, and most use either the Kahana Sunset mgt to rent, or through Sullivan Realtors. Our unit had the Kahana Sunset folks and they were OUTSTANDING! Helpful, friendly, accommodating. Onsite, and have daily service to clean and change linens.

We renewed our vows while here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5A2q1Q7Xf4 for the video) and are seen here on our Lanai just outside the unit. Great ocean front, lots of beach down below, and first night we spotted 15 sea turtles in the cove below us.

This is not hotel living! It's much better, allowing us to relax, cook if we want, watch the whales in our jammies, and walk out the door to the ocean. Truly a home in a vacation spot.

TY Kahana Sunset, and the owner of unit A10!

Room Tip: Building A and F have direct access to the ocean with superb views. All other units are great, but...

“E1E has cockroaches! But beach is amazing- stay in another apt.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The beach is right there, and is amazing- with gorgeous sunsets and soft sand, plus fun waves. We watched a sunset and were the only two people on the sand there!

But, we found several cockroaches, including coming back from the beach to find one crawling on our cutting board and one flying and landing on me in the middle of the night. I received no response from the owner when I emailed and explained the situation.

Also, when our neighbors cooked bacon, the smell came through the fan in the kitchen, making our whole apartment smell like bacon- yuck! the place was generally a touch run-down, but that's fine for the price. The cockoaches were my main issue.

If you can stay in a different building, this is probably a great place to stay. You will have to drive to reach dining or shopping, but there is a little liquor store and a couple restaurants a couple miles down the road. It is a 15 minute drive into Lahaina though.

Room Tip: Stay away from E1E or anything close to it.

“A great place to enjoy Maui.”

We rented unit D7 and it was great! Beautiful kitchen, great TVs and stereo, large rooms and tasteful decor. There were five of us and it was plenty of space, no crowding. We did see turtles on the beach to the side and whales breached just off shore. The grounds are immaculate. The beach is very small, but only once was is it too crowded. The pool is small and no hot tub, but it was perfect for jumping in and the kids loved it. Only problem was one employee would not allow floaties, pool toys or noodles. Very odd and disappointing for the little ones.
Don't plan on walking down the road to the little quick mart, store or restaurants. There are no sidewalks and it is very narrow and I think very dangerous for walking or riding a bike. That said.
Our stay of 14 days was wonderful and we are thinking of returning.

Room Tip: We loved D7. Great view of the grounds, pool and ocean. Nice decor, great kitchen. Nicer than some of...

“Great family destination with an almost private beach!”

We know many people who have stayed at Kahana Sunset and after staying in the Westin/Grand Wailea decided to give this a try. We were in love! We stayed in unit A4 which was fabulous. I know many of the units are not remodeled and I would highly recommend only getting one that has been. We loved the location of A, we saw sea turtles before even opening our door. The year before in Kannappali we saw none the whole time so this was huge for us. My kids asked to stay here if we go back over the Grand Wailea-now that is saying something. Our unit was clean, the grouns were beautiful, we had a fabulous view of the ocean. Seriously heaven on earth. The pool is small but my 3 children still had a great time and the beach is almost private. When we were there it was virtually empty. Only thing I would say is the day we left the pool was closing for renovations for the week and many people were upset b/c they were not told. I would ask if any work is being done before booking b/c that would have seriously changed my review if that pool was unusable. But overall a wonderful experience. We also saved a lot of money vs hotel with cooking, free parking and no resort fees. Win win!!
