My husband and I stayed at Ho'oilo House December 7-11, 2011. Upon arrival we were shown to our room, Kohola. The room was spacious considering the size of the bed and there was ample closet space in addition to a dresser. However, better than the bed was the view from the lanai as well as the super roomy bathroom. The stone bathtub was fantastic at holding hot water for extra long soaking and the outdoor shower head was perfect for washing sand away effectively :)
The view at any time was incredible. During early morning hours the deep dark sky was bursting with stars and shooting stars on occasion. The sunsets were gorgeous against Molokai (I think that was the island across the sea, shameful I know) and rainbows against the mountains were seen daily. The house was truly a Balinese home, and the furnishings were authentic. I was grateful for all of the amenities including, beach bags, books, chess board, games, sun hats, maps, umbrellas, travel books and so on.
As a vegan the breakfast selection was outstanding. Each morning there was a new type of muffin and bread - the cornbread raisin was especially nice as well as the delicious chai. My husband who is not a vegan, never tired from the baked goods selection or the wonderful fruit salad and cereals. We never experienced the "not enough food" that others mentioned.
We did not go in the pool but the fountains provided a really nice ambiance. As most others have mentioned, we hardly encountered any other guests beyond breakfast but when we did everyone was so relaxed and easy going, it truly felt like a home.
Dan & Amy were wonderful - they have a lot of interesting knowledge to share and are hosts that welcome you without intruding on your vacation.
