We booked our trip through More Hawaii For Less . You can book directly through them though, so google their website: Makani Sands. Their photos and video don't do the property justice. The unit we stayed in was 209. This was the 2nd from the corner unit on the 2nd floor. It was not the most modern unit, but it was clean and right on the water. The Staff and Grounds people were kind and helpful. When one of the people staying next to us, locked themselves on the balcony, John the onsite night manager was there in a jiffy and got them unlocked from the inside. Every morning they are cleaning up the grounds, which were kept perfectly clean and watered. The unit came fully furnished with everything you would need in a kitchen, bathroom and beach chairs etc. There is also 2 BBQ's to use, which I did with BBQ Oysters that I got from Star Market just south of us on the left side in the Maui Dive Shopping center. There is also a wonderful stretch of beach you can walk down which is really romantic. They have up to 3b, 2b units that are town house style on the upper 3rd and 4th floors. Plus they have a pool. But who needs a pool in Hawaii???
The sound of the ocean crashing (1-2 foot small waves) is a very relaxing sound. Be sure to rent snorkel gear from Boss Frog’s or Maui Diving just a few blocks down the street as you can snorkel right in front of the Condo. Also, just south of us on the left hand side in the Maui Dive shop center is Java Jazz which is a little funky cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The coffee is great, staff is pleasant and the food was terrific! Also in the same shopping center is a Pizza, sandwich place (can't remember the name) which has good cheap food for quick bites to eat. Within this shopping center is Star Market and other tourist shops, etc. There is also a Mexican restaurant which has a bar that is open until 2 a.m.
ABC market (like a super 7-11) has a gas station and all the tourist stuff you need to buy and take home to the family and also has a Taco Truck that shows up at night till about 10-11 pm that has some of the best Salsa and Tacos I have ever had (and I am from California!), that is just down the street as well on the right hand side. Just north is Dolly's Pub and Grill. They have some of the best Pub food that you can eat. This is a local hang out and was recommended to me by a local. They have 17 TV's so if you want to catch your local Football team playing, this is the spot. Get there early and your $10 dollar entrance fee on the Sunday gets you two drinks or a custom made omelet with anything you could want. Great local crowd too!
Three must try 'Good Eats' places:
1) Jonny's Burger Joint in Kaanapali (lower level of an Italian restaurant). One of the best burgers I ever had!
2) Kobe Japanese Steak House in Lahaina off of Dickenson Street. This was a great experience, our chef was really funny and made some really good food. Reservations recommended.
3) Kimo's (on Front Street in downtown Lahaina). This was recommended to me by a friend. Outstanding steak and seafood. Make your reservation around sunset about 45 minutes early and then ask for preferred seating on the water. This was a very romantic evening. Afterwards, walk across the street just north and get some Hawaiian Shaved ice.
Save your money from staying at a fancy resort for $300 a night as there are many, many good places to eat in this area. Use that money like we did to Scuba, Snorkel and get a very nice 90 minute massage that totally relaxes your senses.
Make sure to drive down highway 30 on Honoapillini highway and go to Papalua Wayside Park. You can park your Jeep (make sure to rent a Jeep - it will come in handy more than you know plus you can take of the top) right on the sandy beaches and be all alone as we were. There was some great snorkeling too!
We also did the road to Hana. If have never done it before, it sure is a site to see (bring camera). The drive is about 2-3 hours each way if you go all the way to the seven pools so make sure to leave early. Plan this as an All Day trip because it really is a 'Day' trip. Then on your way back Stop at Mama's Fish house for dinner. Good Food. Make sure to get the Trip to Hana CD for the drive. You can get it just about any tourist stop.
We will surely come back to the Makani Sands as it was centrally located to close everything.
The photos are taken with my camera from our balcony. Again, don't waste your money at the big resorts. Save your money and come back again sooner!!!
