“Highly recommend this Hawaiian B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2007

My husband and I (Americans) stayed at the House of Fountains Dec ‘07. We had a great time-there is so much to recommend here; nice friendly hosts, clean, spacious home in a residential area which is just a mile or so from the center of Lahaina. The house contains many Hawaiian and Polynesian artifacts and Don, being a native Hawaiian, was always ready to discuss them and share his knowledge of Hawaiian history and culture with us.

Breakfast is served in the great room around a very large table with a lazy susan packed with everything you could want for breakfast. The hosts often joined us all for breakfast as well and the discussions that ensued usually meant we spend an hour or more at breakfast. Now that’s enjoying your vacation!

Adjacent to the great room is a Lanai which the guest can use (and we did quite often) and on the lower floor is a great pool area with tables and chairs and a kitchen area that is specifically for guest use. This is a great place where we and the other guests gathered in the early evening after a long day or later in the evening as well.

As some of have said, there are probably a higher percentage of german speaking guests staying here, but don’t let that stop you. English is spoken by all of the staff, and the international array of guests while we were there had no problem talking with one another. We also did not find the children noisy nor is the home cluttered.

The House of Fountains is truly homey and comfy. If you’re looking for a B&B in Maui on the west coast I would highly recommend this Hawaiian B&B.

“Can't recommend it enough”

The House of Fountains is wonderful. The rooms are immaculate and spacious. The breakfast had a wide variety of tasty things to eat all on a large round revolving top table so all the guests can sit and eat together. The atmosphere was really friendly, everyone made us feel really welcome. The extras you get here are great - like laundry is $2 per load. Theres a communal kitchen and BBQ if you don't want to go out for dinner. Don the co-owner will tell you all about Hawaiian culture and the artifacts he has on display in the house. This place is everything that a big resort isn't - i loved it.

“A little noisy but friendly service, good breakfast, and immaculate room!”

I was a little nervous about booking this B&B based on some of the negative reviews on here. I spoke with one of the owners, Daniela, and she was very friendly and responsive. When I emailed her with questions, she got back to me very quickly. So, I booked 4 nights in the Mauka Room.

The owners have 2 young children and they can be noisy at times but it only really affected us when we wanted to take an afternoon nap one day after a long morning of sightseeing.

The breakfasts are quite good--lots of fruits, breads, meats, and cheeses to choose from and it's all laid out on a huge lazy susan so you can help yourself to whatever you want. Our room was spacious and immaculately clean. My husband and I especially enjoyed speaking with Don, Daniela's husband and co-owner of the B&B. Don is very knowledgeable about Hawaiian history and culture and told us some interesting facts about Ni'ihau (which is an island forbidden to all but those invited by special invitation). The house is a little cluttered (for my taste) in the main area but there are lots of interesting Hawaiian artifacts and items and Don (our "curator") is happy to tell you anything you may want to know about them. My husband and I were not at all uncomfortable with German being spoken in the house and the staff speaks fluent English. While we were there, there was one family from Germany, one couple from Atlanta, and one local couple from Maui. All in all, we enjoyed our stay at the House of Fountains and would go back again. Next time, I might book a room upstairs which might dampen the noise from the children.

  • Liked — Proximity to Lahaina, breakfast, friendliness of staff, cleanliness of room, fridge in room
  • Disliked — Noisy children

“LOVED the House of Fountains - Most Hawaiian B&B on Maui”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2007

We were traveling for our 1 year wedding anniversary and visiting some friends on West Maui but needed a hotel room until we could get into the resort our friends had booked. We found House of Fountains ([----]). I called and spoke with one of the very friendly owners, Daniela Atay. I felt as if I had made a friend - her website shows you some of the rooms and the wonderful breakfast which combines, European, American and Hawaiian foods. We stayed in the Makai Studio. Our room was spacious and on our pillows were tiny packages of Macadamia nuts. On our first day, my husband and I ate breakfast and talked with others staying at the B&B for almost 2 hours. We met people from Germany, Scotland and Candada. We created freindships over breakfast over the next week that will last a lifetime. The staff kept the B&B immaculately clean, the selections of fresh fruits, cheeses, Island breads and other dalily selctions flowed freeley. The owners were on vacation when we arrived but their staff from Germany, Carola and Ilonia spoke prefect English and German and always greeted you with smiles and wanted to make sure we had a great day. After an exhausting day snorkeling or visitng the shops and art galleries in Lahaina, it was refreshing to bring back a bottle of wine and join the others at the House of Fountans for a swim in the pool or conversation and a glass of wine on the upper lanai while sharing our adventures and watching the whales over the balcony. We were sad to leave the House of Fountains to join our friends at a nearby resort. The 5-star resort paled in comparison to the House of Fountains. We missed the House of Fountains their wonderful breakfast, clean rooms, friendly people - plus all the extras from use of coolers and beach towels to beach mats and vidoes of the Island to get you acquainted with Maui. We visited the guests and staff at House of Fountains twice before we left the Island. When we return later this year to Maul, we will be staying the whole time at House of Fountains. We highly recommed staying at the House of Fountains.

“Mostly pros at the House of Fountains!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2007

My husband and I stayed here in the Alii Suite for six days. Don and Daniela were away on vacation at the time so there were no children being noisy. There were birds that created quite a racket and woke us in the mornings but although our room is next to the dining room we didn't hear much of people talking at the table. Breakfast (and it is a great breakfast!) is served from 7:30 to 9:00 each day and at first I thought that would be too early because we're on vacation and who wants to be up, dressed and at the table by that time? We found though that the heat and activity of the day really takes it out of you and we were in bed pretty early most nights so it was not a problem to be up in time for breakfast. As others have said, there is a lot of german spoken here but we did not find it a problem at all. Once we started speaking to them they always spoke back to us in english. Actually while we were there it was quite an international grouping. We had german, swiss, english, american and canadians. Conversation was very interesting!
Our room was very large and airy, the furniture seemed quite minimal for the size of the room but it was comfortable with nice views. The cleaning staff was very efficient and our room was always immaculate.
There is a well equipped kitchen available for guest use and we prepared a couple of meals there. We also used the barbeque (after chasing the mouse out) that was poolside. It was very nice to enjoy your meal and a glass of wine next to the pool with the lovely garden lighting.
They are currently doing some work to the pool area and it's definitely required. The pool has been completely re-tiled and looks great but unfortunately the water was uncomfortably cold. The area all around the pool is going to be tiled too which will go a long ways to upgrading the appearance. There was a bit of an unkempt look to the pool area which may have been a result of the storm the week before we arrived. The jacuzzi was a bit of a disappointment as we had purposely looked for a place with a pool and jacuzzi. It's kind of in an awkward spot to access but I was told to go ahead and use it so I climbed up there but found the water tepid with a scum line and dead bugs floating in it. Didn't make me want to jump in and relax with my cocktail so sadly I had to forego that. The pool furniture however appears to be new and is very nice.
I only mention the few small problems because I rely heavily on trip advisor when selecting a place to stay and I'm sure I'm not the only one. People come here for a good, honest account of what a place is really like and want details because there are some things that people won't or can't tolerate so it's better to know up front. It's also helpful for owners to know where improvements could be made because they, of course, want people to be satisfied that it's worth the price.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff were cheerful, courteous and helpful and we felt very comfortable here.
