“Hale Kai #213 -- A Hidden Beachfront Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We celebrated our 5th year wedding anniversary in January 2012. When considering where to stay, we keyed in on 3 things. View, Location, and Price. We visited Maui 6 years ago, staying at the Westin Hotel along the world famous Ka'anapali beach. We loved the premium location of a beachfront resort, but the price of staying there was very expensive, even for a room without the view of the ocean! Along came Hale Kai #213 and the place was simply paradise! Nested in between the Ka'anapali and Kapalua beaches, we got to stay at a premium beachfront location at only a fraction of the costs. We had a gorgeous full frontal view of the ocean from our balcony and we were literally 10 steps away from the water.

When we arrived to Hale Kai #213, we were welcomed with a fresh bouquet of island flowers, courtesy of Matt, the owner, to help kickoff the celebration of our stay. The unit was impecabbly clean, with a very nice bamboo themed accented decor. There is a lot to love about this place. The open space and fully stocked kitchen came with everything you can imagine. They even had a rice cooker and we made use of it one night for dinner. The unit came furnished with all the little amenities that you don't really think about when you're planning your trip, but definitely came in handy once you're there. There were beach chairs and a full size beach umbrella in the unit for you to use. The owners had binoculars and a telescope to allow you to view the abundant sea turtles that lounge around the shores of the condo from the balcony. As a special treat, we got to see a humpback whale spouting during one lazy afternoon! There were many books describing the many activities Maui has to offer. They even had a "Road to Hana" self-guided CD, which we made use of on our day trip to Hana. Good luck finding these amenities (for free) at a resort! We knew on the first day that we walked into someone's home, and not a vacation rental. The TLC that the owners put into this unit was in full display, right down to the smallest of details.

We spent alot of time lounging around the unit and with so much to do in Maui, this is a testament to how much we enjoyed staying at Hale Kai #213. Matt went out of his way to check-in with us, making sure the New Year's Eve fireworks didn't scare us off the property, and to make sure our stay was as fabulous as the views of Maui. I would highly recommend this place and I would stay at this place again in a heartbeat!

Mahalo Matt for inviting us to your "home by the sea!"

“Your Pacific Paradise - Hale Kai #107”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

On my first visit to Hawaii I stayed at Unit 107 at Hale Kai Condominiums. This is an individually owned unit within a small complex of 40 in total. I love the location – it sits right on the ocean’s edge with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. The boutique complex has a beautiful pool with a 180’ ocean view, including the islands of Molokai and Lanai’i, barbeque area, laundry facilities and a professionally staffed office. There is free on-site parking which is a real bonus. The complex sits right on a beautifully maintained park, and there is an organic market, coffee shop and other retails shops right across the street with an open air farmer’s market M-W-F. Each morning I would take a short stroll to get coffee, returning to sit on my lanai looking at the ocean and listening to the waves and local birds. It was oftentimes hard to motivate myself to get ready to go out. In the evening we would sit on the lanai and watch the stunning sunsets (taking lots of pictures). And – so many rainbows!

I was even more pleased with the unit we stayed in #107. The place was spotless when I arrived. It has been remodeled with beautiful tiles throughout, a comfortable California king size bed, beautiful furniture, and plenty of storage in the closet, dresser and night stands. And the fabulous bathroom! The glass shower screen is etched with a large sea turtle swimming in the ocean. I also want to point out that it has a full vanity cabinet – this is important for me, as I need a place to lay things down when using them (hair brush, curling iron, etc.). Quality linens were also provided, a nice plus for me.

I love to cook so was so glad to see the modern kitchen so well-equipped. It had almost everything I use at home! I did not have to purchase one spice or even cooking oil – it was all there.

The unit has a large wall-mounted flat screen TV and DVD player however, I think I only turned it on twice to check the local weather – I was enjoying the sound of the surf and relaxing so much that it did not even dawn on me to turn it on. The place was so tastefully furnished and decorated – the island charm was overwhelming. The overhead fans and local trade winds kept me very comfortable.

One morning I saw dolphins jumping through the waves right off the beach in front of me. Mornings and evenings I watched the huge sea turtles in the surf, swimming very close to the beach out front. They even have their own banana trees on site, they hang a bunch outside the office for guests to share during their visit.

#107 was like staying in someone’s nicely furnished and decorated unit rather than a vacation rental. It is located on the ground floor (no stairs for me!), and I could enjoy both the ocean view and park right from the unit and lanai. I counted – I was able to take 30 steps from the lanai and be on the beach!

This was an unbelievable trip – I am so glad I was able to stay in unit #107 at Hale Kai for my first Hawaiian experience. I stayed for 10 nights in November 2011 and I would highly recommend this unit to anyone.

Room Tip: Easy access on ground floor, nice and cool - truely 'Your Pacific Paradise' with a great loc...

Stayed for three weeks. Condo is remodeled from top to bottom. Furniture and beds are all very comfortable. Decorated so fun and kitchen has everthing you could want. Love being on the first floor so close to the pool, beach and barbeques. So much more fun than the big crowded resorts. Loved the wine fridge! Close walk to Dukes and Whaler's Village. Farmer's market and the fish market are nearby. If you are looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend Hale Kai 119.

“Honeymoon at Hale Kai #213”

(I am reposting this review with the unit number)

My newlywed wife and I spent four nights in the unit #213 condo right after our wedding mid-Sept 2011. We were really glad we skipped the expensive resorts for this lovely condo. Our stay was excellent and we really enjoyed all the amenities of Hale Kai. We both agreed that we would gladly return to the condo again.

We arrived to a lovely bouquet of exotic local flowers that the owner, Matt, purchased for us. Unit 213 was very clean and nicely appointed, with nicely updated kitchen and bathroom. The view from the lanai is amazing (photos don't lie). Molokai greets you from across the water, with the sea lapping at the rocks literally right in front of the complex. The pool is excellent and well-maintained: it was cleaned and serviced every morning by 9am opening. The condo is well appointed and tastefully furnished. We didn't use the LCD or Blu-ray player, but the ipod radio came in handy. The spotter's scope a plus. The deck table was great for eating breakfast and dinner. W/D on site were really handy. Manager was very helpful/nice. Grounds are really well maintained, ample parking.

Unit 213's kitchen has everything you need (blender worked great!), and we also grilled a meal on the complex's BBQs. There is a small excellent farmer's market M/W/F AM within a block, a must-visit. There's also a good fish market nearby and some basic food options, as well as a market down the road. Drive to Safeway (Lahaina) for groceries, Long's Drugs for alcohol, the fish market, produce at the farmer's market.

Unit 213 has no AC and can get warm during the day, but at night the screened louvered windows will let in a nice breeze. You'll sleep great to the sound of nearby crashing waves. The bed is very comfortable and the bedroom drapes keep it very dark. There is some street noise, but I'm a light sleeper and it didn't bother me (might be louder in season or on weekends). There's an ample storage in the bedroom and bath, the room includes handy beach chairs and an umbrella (be careful, the beach can get really breezy).

The condo isn't far from Lahaina (a plus), but we got in ample stargazing at night from the pool. We're told you can snorkel out front, but we skipped it (reef scared us off). We did see some sea turtles right in front one afternoon. Longterm residents are very friendly, but on two occasions visitors to the complex were loud. However, this was rare and didn't last long (the exact opposite of your typical Maui resort experience).

Unit 213 is a great property, Matt is a great owner. Highly recommended!!

“Unit 209 Owner Reply”

Owner Reply Condo 209

I stay at the condo four weeks over several visits per year. I've never seen any roaches in the unit.
Nor has any other owner or guest experienced them.

I noticed, in the comments, that the "roaches" hadn't appeared till the third day of the stay. One thing that attracts any type of insect is
exposed food, which is especially true in a "tropical" environment.

The unit is professionally cleaned after each departure and before each new arrival. It is "deep cleaned" on a semi-annual basis. It's also sprayed every three months.

The upstairs loft/bedroom is consistently cooled by a large portable A/C unit. On an extremely
hot or humid day, it may feel warm as it is a loft with high ceilings. There is also a ceiling fan to help distribute the cooling air.

Outside noise from the park next door may happen on occasion. The location of the park provides an alternative to the beach, an area for larger group play and picnics and good family space. If a visitor is looking for a more seclusive spot then perhaps our condo is not for them.
