This property has two cottages and we stayed in the Mahaina Cottage. The word Mahaina is Hawaiian for Moonlight and it is appropriate. Located about 3000 up the side of Haleakala it has wonderful views from the lanai which overlooks the valley below all the way to the West Maui mountains. There is a nice garden below with many beautiful plants. Off to one side of the garden is a gazebo where you can sit and enjoy the view while you relax. Anne Miura one of the owners had everything ready for us and spent some time going over a map of the area pointing out places to eat and some points of interest. It was the perfect spot from which to do our exploring of the up country area of Maui. The temperature at this elevation was 59-72
F during our stay so take a sweater or light jacket. There were even insulated jackets in the closet for use when you go to the summit of Haleakala as we did for the sunrise. Temperature there at 5:30 AM was 40F so the jackets came in handy. Another reviewer stated it was difficult to find in the dark but we did not have that problem. There is a street light just before the driveway so we just looked for that when approaching the area. There are also mile markers on the road and the property is between the 16 and 16.5 marks which also gives you another aid. We dined out at the little towns around the area and did not use the complete kitchen. The living area and bedroom were spacious with a moderate bath which had one sink. We were there during a full moon which, being a romantic, I would have liked but it cut down on the amount of star gazing I was hoping for. All in all a small price to pay for a few days in paradise.
