We had planned to go to Haleakala Crater and decided to stay at Kula Lodge. We read the reviews, so we understood their might be issues with noise and smell. And yes, there were issues with noise and smell. We did not spend much time in the room as we arrived late and left the next morning. As the other reviews stated, the smell is musty and if you are highly sensitive, could give you a headache. While the noise was not as bad as I had expected, our family did wake up in the middle of the night. And yes, insulation was poor, although we had quiet neighbors. On the bright side, the rooms are spacious, and I would not have been bothered at all by the room if it were not for the smell. Yes, the furniture was dated, but everything was clean. It was a nice contrast to the resorts on the other side of the island. The grounds are beautiful. I really tried to like the Kula Lodge, but the smell was just too much. It does appear that Kula Lodge will be going through a renovation soon. I hope they are able to keep the charm of the lodge as it is very beautiful. Fix the smell and the insulation -- I think the place will be great!
