“Lovely, except for the smell”

We had planned to go to Haleakala Crater and decided to stay at Kula Lodge. We read the reviews, so we understood their might be issues with noise and smell. And yes, there were issues with noise and smell. We did not spend much time in the room as we arrived late and left the next morning. As the other reviews stated, the smell is musty and if you are highly sensitive, could give you a headache. While the noise was not as bad as I had expected, our family did wake up in the middle of the night. And yes, insulation was poor, although we had quiet neighbors. On the bright side, the rooms are spacious, and I would not have been bothered at all by the room if it were not for the smell. Yes, the furniture was dated, but everything was clean. It was a nice contrast to the resorts on the other side of the island. The grounds are beautiful. I really tried to like the Kula Lodge, but the smell was just too much. It does appear that Kula Lodge will be going through a renovation soon. I hope they are able to keep the charm of the lodge as it is very beautiful. Fix the smell and the insulation -- I think the place will be great!

“Worth the price?”

It was not easy to find a decent lodging on a Saturday night...on the Thursday before! We had to take one of the most expensive units, over $200 with tax. That is not exactly our usual range! But, we enjoyed the saxophone music drifting over from the restaurant. We enjoyed the great view from our private lanai (got a bottle of wine from the marketplace next door). We also added to our lunch stores from the marketplace and enjoyed the ambiance without upping for the dinner at the Lodge. Why should we when we had the view already? We got to get ice to replenish our cooler. It was a nice contrast to the less expensive places we have stayed. Even got a little wifi from our room, though it was not expected and offered. A lovely place.

Room Tip: Prices pretty much let you know how much view you will get.

“Great breakfast+great view”

Visited Kula Lodge after viewing the sunrise at Haleakala. Great combination of activities. We were pretty hungry after being up at three am and the Kula Lodge breakfast was just what we needed. I had the sunrise breakfast with the basic egg/bacon/toast combo which was excellent. My husband had the huge pancakes with macademia pieces and coconut and maple syrup. We sampled each other's and together was a great breakfast. We went as part of the Temptation tour to Haleakla so I can't comment on cost as it was included in our tour. The view from the Kula Lodge is breathtaking.

“Beware of "supper club music"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We live on Maui and visit Kula Lodge with some frequency, often taking out-of-town guests there. Tonight was the first time we've been subject to "live music" during our dinner. A feeble saxophone player who cued up recorded "background music" on his Apple and then played along with it -- and quite loudly. When we complained to the maitre d' [we could scarcely converse with our guests], his response was "well, it's live music."

The food was fine, nothing to dance in the streets over, but good. Our other meals there have been good as well. Service was attentive and well-intentioned. But the horrid music ruined it all.

If you go, call ahead to see if their "artist" is playing.

“Bring your own lunch!!”

Stopped today for a bite of lunch and the view. Although the view was wonderful, too bad we couldn't say the same for lunch. Mine was disappointing, worse yet my wife got very ill after having the crab cake appetizer. I called the manager Dennis to report the problem right away. At first he doubted the that my wife could have gotten ill so quickly however when I told him this was about the health of other customers he said he would check it out. Final thoughts - I won't be back and unless they can do something about the quality of their food, I wouldn't recommend the Kula Lodge.
