“RIGHT on the beach, but 20 minutes from everywhere”

We were in unit 415 and found the unit excellently appointed with all the supplies needed for a week-long stay - utensils, dishes, cookware, laundry etc. The unit uses sliding doors/pocket doors to separate areas a lot, so it doesn't appear "upscale". On the other hand, as a family who was in Hawaii to play, relax, and spend time outside rather than in, this unit was fine. The units have excellent sound insulation, for we were never bothered at all by noise from any unit around us - either to the sides, above or below.

The kids loved the hot tub and the pool as a change up from the ocean, which was beautiful but full of SHARP coral just steps into the water. As you will undoubtedly have read, there are only two BBQs that work with any sort of regularity or heat - so scope them out early in the evening or plan on a later dinner, after the crowd is done - by 6:30 or so, you should be able to get one of them without waiting or sharing them.

The beach stretches on either side of the resort - good for a solid 45 minutes of walking both ways. You could probably walk all the way into Kihei town if you had an hour or more. ONE PROBLEM with the location is that Sugar Beach is fairly isolated from the rest of Kihei, and if you have someone who does not want to spend all of their time at the beach, there is little else to do or see there. My mother-in-law would have loved to walk around and do some shopping but there is NOTHING close - the town is at least 15 minutes drive from Sugar Beach, certainly too far for most older travellers to walk. When the rest of us were gone to Big Beach or Kahalui, she felt stranded in Sugar Beach.

We found that the staff at the reservation desk in the courtyard office were not at all helpful or friendly after the initial intake meeting - we stayed for 10 days, but when we ran out of supplies like laundry soap etc after 5 days, they were slow or non-responsive to our calls. It took repeated calls and visits to get the fresh supplies ourselves. On the other hand, all of the grounds maintenance staff were extremely friendly and accommodating.

All in all, it was a nice place at a great price, and we would stay there again, but we might also look at something closer to town for a little variety.

Room Tip: Rooms in the North building (Plantation?) get less wind. The higher floors get less of the pool deck...

“GREAT OCEAN VIEW!Condo could use an update.”

We just returned from a 1 week stay in this owner-resort. The view from our fifth floor lanai was SPECTACULAR to say the least. We watched whales whenever we were on the lanai. The condo was equipped with everything you would need and had a nice selection of books in one room. The condo was very spacious and setup well for 2 couples or a family. However twin beds in the second room may be make this unit(512) more suitable for a young family. The condo itself was reasonably clean but was in DESPERATE need of a thorough cleaning and update! The pool and grounds were very well taken care!.The beach outside the resort was wonderful and you could walk for miles on the beautiful beach! I would certainly give this resort another try because of its location and the unit itself would be fine if it was updated.

“Oceanfront Paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

This was our second stay at Sugar Beach Resort, and we loved it. It's important to remember that this is a condominium community, so one person's experience in one condo may be entirely different from someone else's experience in another. We've been fortunate both times, but we insist on seeing good pictures of any condo we rent, in Hawaii or anywhere else. It's true that some of the outside areas of the two buildings could use more attention or updating, but the grounds are immaculately kept and the pool/whirlpool area is lovely. If this resort were any closer to the ocean it would be submerged, and it's amazing to sit on a balcony with a spectacular view of the ocean, watching the pounding surf and a beautiful sunset.

Seriously, if you're looking for frou-frou luxury on Maui, go to the Fairmont or the Four Seasons and pay $900+ per night. If you just want a comfortable, laid-back place by the ocean where you can relax, the Sugar Beach Resort is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: Do NOT make a reservation here unless you've seen good pictures of the inside of the condo--they...

“Great view and location!!”

We stayed in Room 211 in October 2011... It was perfect for our needs. I traveled with my husband and four year old. We are low key travelers and appreciated that the condo was fully furnished. Staying here is not like a hotel, but more like being at home with amenities like washer, dryer and full kitchen. We made our own itinerary and really liked the hands off approach of the management. I would recommend not booking and tours through the condos as we noticed they were overpriced. Overall loved it and will definitely book there on out next trip!!!. One tip if traveling with children, hit up a local dive shop and get a view board so you can take them snorkeling even if they are young, this made our trip!!!!

“sugar beach disappointment - mauiholiday.com”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

Beware! mauiholiday.com one bedroom at sugarbeach was the biggest disappointment we've ever had on a holiday. Complex is like Cell Block H. Unit - dirty. Got sick at a recommended restaurant (Pita Place in Wailea) then resort would not refund booked luai (even though 24 hour notice!) Bed linen disgusting. Washing machine had to vent through shower fan! Only nice part was balcony with ocean view. Avoid it. Absolutely ruined our rare time away - John & Jill, Pemberton BC

Room Tip: The whole complex is like a prison. Filthy elevator. Staircase smells of pee. If you open room do...
