“If you like old and dirty”

We stayed in an upper unit that we rented though VRBO. The unit was very dirty with the original appliances. Our thought was maybe the owner was an absentee and hasn't been to the unit in a long time. All the kitchen utensils were miss matched, the rugs were so dirty we rolled them up. We literally spent 3 days cleaning the unit. The TV's are very old, when renting videos it just showed a small sliver across the screen. We were grateful for the tile floors since we were able the clean them daily and walk around with our socks. The lanai was so dirty that we hardly used it, it needed a good hose down. All and all the owners most likely haven't seen the place in years. The unit manager is very lazy, mud everywhere tracked into the units. The place has great potential but for now the price you pay is about the same you would for cleaner and better units down the street.

“Avoid Kihei Bay Vista”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

We stayed at the Kihei Bay Vista in unit A-203 for a week in January 2011. We booked an air and condo package through Escapes.ca (West Jet Vacations). Although the property and grounds are nice enough, the condo unit was horrible. Everything was falling apart. There was no TLC put into this place and nothing looked like it was updated since it was first built. The first thing we encountered is that there was no hot water the night we arrived. I am not sure how this was not discovered earlier since you'd think the person who cleaned the unit would have noticed. Anyway, it turns out the hot water tank had died and it had to be replaced. After a call to the management company, the hot water tank was replaced within 3 hours. The rest of the unit was dated and many things needed to be fixed. I am not sure how so many things have been allowed to fall in disrepair and not have been attended to. Apparently the owner of the unit does not care enough to check out the condition of the property and to make regular maintenance. Anyway, the following is a list of areas which were falling apart:
1) Hot water tank was broken when we arrived
2) The unit had a musty smell that never went away even with the windows open.
3) The tap handle in the bathtub kept falling off which made it very difficult to adjust the shower and temp of the water
4) the fridge/freezer made a horrible noise that you could hear all the way in the bedroom. It sounded like it was on its last legs. We had to keep the bedroom door closed at night so that we wouldn't hear it.
5) The sink in the bathroom was plugged up and it took forever for it to drain. It also had a nasty smell.
6) The face on the door of the microwave was coming off and we were worried about the safety of it so we never used it. This is more than an inconvenince but is a safety concern.
7) The handle on the fridge kept falling off.
8) The sliding screen to the balcony kept falling off.
9) The air conditioner was so rusted that it presented a potential hazard if someone scraped themselves against it or fell onto it, particularly children.

The other thing to keep in mind that we didn't know is that this area is prone to flooding. We spoke with a resident of the complex and he told us that the condo grounds are now more prone to flooding due to construction of a residential development behind the Bay Vista. And unfortunately, we experienced this first hand. We woke up one morning after a night of rain and the condo grounds, the parking lot and S. Kihei road was completely flooded. Our rental car had water and mud in it from the flooding as well. We never received a call from from the management company or the owner of the condo unit to find out whether we were Ok or whether they could assist us with anything. We heard from other tenant in the building that the owner of their units came down to the building to see how things were and to assist. The least they could have done was to phone us to see whether we were OK.

For all of these reasons I cannot recommend this condo and question why West Jet Vacations would contract this place as one of their suppliers. Clearly they have not done due diligence in their research of the condos that they provide in their packages. I would have expected higher quality from West Jet vacations.

“value for money”

Kihei Bay Vista is just 100 meters from the beach, but snorkeling/swimming there is not the best as water is a bit murky. You can still see some fish, but snorkeling is much better in Wailea. In the morning and evening you can see locals coming to fish there. The condos are just 10 min drive from Kamaole I-III beaches, and maybe 5 minutes to the supermarkets (Foodland and Safeway) and outdoor markets, which is convenient. About 15 min. to Maui Ocean Centre.

We stayed in D206. This 1 bdrm unit was clean and tidy. It has a nice lanai, with lots of fine sand blown by the afternoon wind. No dustpan to collect the sand.

The unit is well equipped, but TVs, washer/dryer, blinds etc. show age. The essential supplies were sort of low, so you'll have to go pick up your own very soon.

The condo grounds are also very clean and green. Nice clean pool and hot tub. The BBQs as of Aug 2010 were very rusty on the inside - is it because of the salt in the air? It looks like the grills need replacing... Otherwise, very good stay - for those who don't spend much time indoors. Why would you stay at home when there's so much to see and to do on Maui?

“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2010

We spent 10 days in Maui and enjoyed the apartment A204 (rented from a private person not from the on-site organisation).
Very clean and complete. A great starting point from which to explore the island.

“Kihei Bay Vista was just right for us”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2008

My husband and I just spent 2 weeks at Kihei Bay Vista (unit D109). It was basic , clean and had everything we needed. There was some noise from the road so next time we would stay in building C. We were there before school was out for summer vacation so there wasnt alot of noise from the pool. It was no frills and no ocean view but we spent most of our time out on the beach and just slept and cooked in the condo. We would definately stay there again. Great price. It was our first time in Maui and we have nothing but amazing memories celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary.
If you are used to the Ritz Carlton you wouldnt like it ,but if you just want a home base to come and go from its just right.

  • Liked — the value for the price
  • Disliked — road noise!
