“Affordable, clean & convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This was our third time staying at KKN in the past 3 years, in 4 different units (218,219,246,143). We rented all through an owners' website - http://www.ownersmaui.com . I have to say it was a pleasure dealing with these owners & the booking process was very easy. The condos were all as presented on their websites & quite comfortable - I would definitely recommend any of them. The KKN property itself is extremely well located, well maintained & affordable. There are plenty of shops, restaurants & beaches within walking distance to keep you busy & there is also good bus service right out front. If you have a car, there is a free parking spot included. It is a "homey" atmosphere here with a lot of long term & return guests... this can be good or bad, depending on your point of view. Everyone is very friendly & they seem to all know each other, which makes for some loud conversations - some from the ground to the third floor. For instance - I really didn't need to hear about our neighbour's wife's bowel problems ; ) The pool is large & clean & there are fruit trees on the property as well - we picked at least a dozen starfruit! We ate a lot of take-out from the 808 Deli, Maui Tacos & Da Kitchen... & a LOT of ice cream from the shop next door! There is also a Whaler's store & an ABC store very close where you can get basic groceries, toiletries, etc... There are some units with ocean views, but they are also closer to the road & it will be noisier from the restaurant & the garbage pick-up. All in all, I would recommend staying here, just don't expect the Ritz & you'll be fine : )

Room Tip: Condos at the back of the complex are quieter.

“Condo #200 - Perfect Ocean View from very clean condo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Condo #200, 2495 S Kihei Road, Kihei, HI

My husband and got lucky and found this condo available for our recent (January 2012) 10 night stay in Maui after another Kihei Kai Nani condo we had rented turned out to not be what was advertised and we had to move. This owner was gracious enough to reschedule some maintenace work and allow us to move immediately so our vacation was only barely inconvenienced. Her condo was very clean and it has a comfy bed and the extra windows in the bedroom and living room (end unit) make for a nice cross breeze. The kitchen cupboards aren't new but clean and better organized than ours at home! The toaster oven came in handy for reheating leftovers from local restaurants and the TV is a big, new Vizio lcd with a DVD player. The condo is quiet and comfortable. Newer, more comfortable beach chairs would be nice. We love to take our lunch and spend the entire day at the beach but the provided lawn chairs made it impossible to sit all day. Most KKN condos have canvas beach chairs that not only can be carried on your back like a backpack but are very comfortable. About the only thing I missed at this condo was wifi... I had forgotten how annoying having to have my netbook tethered to an ethernet cable to be online can be. All in all this is condo rates right up there with some of the best we have rented previously at Kihei Kai Nani. KKN is directly across the street from one of the best beaches on Maui and you can walk to two easily others along the beach. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance and if you simply follow the specials you can eat very cheaply. You can contact owner at: mauiseacondo@verizon.net for rental info.

“KKN unit 203 is an average, dated condo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

First let me say we go to Maui 2 - 4 times a year for the last 12 years and always stay in Kihei. We've stayed in 8 or so other condo complexes and this is by far the worst condo we've stayed in. The only place we have stayed that is worse is the Maui Lu and that was hotel accomodations. I've had friends stay at other units at the KKN and they had MUCH better accomodations so I won't write off this complex quite yet. This particular unit was furnished nicely in pictures but in person it was faded, stained, and damaged. The cabinet hardware was loose, the doors were falling off their hinges, the kitchen was not very well stocked (unless you like to drink ... there was ample cocktail paraphernalia), very little amenities (1/2 roll TP, no soap, no tissue), ice maker in fridge isn't hooked up, etc. It all felt very ghetto. I'm used to staying in a condo where the owners take pride in their unit and treat you like a guest. This was a bare bones condo with very little alure or other amenities. Very disappointing.

Major gripes were the smokers in the unit below us stayed up until all hours smoking on their lanai so we couldn't leave the windows open for a breeze. But then again, it was so noisy until nearly midnight that we couldn't leave the windows open anyway if we wanted to get any sleep. Between the noise from Fred's and the road noise, we couldn't leave the windows open for a breeze. Also some of the residents take their calls outside in the middle of the night ... presumably to not wake their significant others/kids. Unfortunately, their yelling in the phone woke everyone else around. Good thing was the ceiling fans were VERY quiet and quite efficient. I almost wish they produced a little more noise to drown out the outside noise.

The other issue we had was the 3 times we were offered drugs right in front of the complex. First time was walking out of Fred's at 6:30 pm. Second time walking back from the gelato shop by Denny's. The third time was in the morning on a walk. We are a 40'ish, conservative couple and not trendy/goth/rocker/druggies. I was shocked. We usually stay in north Kihei and haven't been exposed to this seedier side of Kihei.

Room Tip: Do not stay in Building 1, 2 or 13. Building 3 is questionable. Buildings 4-12 are a better bet.

“Kihei Kai Nani #321 - Avoid it! Nothing like other KKN condos.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

It cost us over $500 for find out that this "studio" advertised on VRBO is nothing like it is described nor is it in keeping with the quality of other condos we have rented at KKN. We rented from the owner for 10 nights in January but after arriving and finding the condo so dirty and in such bad shape that we didn't want to stay we contacted the owner. She apologized and told us to feel free to move, which we quickly arranged by contacting other owners who had openings for the time we were going to be in Maui. Once we had another condo lined up we contacted her again but now she was only willing to return 50% of our rental amount even though the following was wrong with the condo when we arrived:
1.) kitchen was dirty and all dishes, etc. grimmy needing a good washing (no dishwasher)
2.) refrigerater rusted, holes in walls in kitchen, electrical outlets broken/not working
3.) a/c filter had 1/2 thick grey gunk we had to clean before we could use it
4.) no "bed" as advertised -- just an old mattress on a board on the floor
5.) bedding worn, thread-bare and bleach stained
6.) advertised as "bright and light" but so dark it was impossible to read a book sitting on sofa; the only lamps had dark covered shades and were set into wall cabinets.
7.) bathroom counter grout filthy; faucet missing cover and filled with gunk/debris
8.) broken bathroom door, splintered and peeling at the bottom
9.) 3 washclothes/2 towels left for a 10 night stay
10.) drapes were dusty and had large stains all along the bottom 1/3
Please don't assume you can trust all KKN owners. It cost us $500+ to find out that some have no pride of ownership, never check on their rentals and do not maintain them but are happy to take your money for not staying there. It won't keep us from staying at KKN in the future but we'll be much more careful.

Room Tip: Do not book unless the listing has reviews that you can verify as actual renters.
