“Wonderful experience and perfect location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

When my boyfriend and I decided to go we did our research to find something unique and un"hotelish". Noni Lani is absolutely wonderful since it is private and a very laid back hawaiian atmosphere. My boyfriend who has a hard time relaxing, absolutely fell in love with this place and was able to really breathe deep and relax. Aaahhhh! Also the stay was very wonderful. I purchased a coconut to drink in Lahina and one of the staff was able to take a machete and split the coconut in half after I had drank all of the coconut milk.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The location is perfect if you are planning to do any fishing trip or touring the island. Easy to get anywhere on the island from Noni Lani. Here's a tip. If you plan to go on the Road to Hani, leave early on Sunday morning. No traffic at all, I could have done cartwheel on the road!

Aloha Chelsey & a big "Mahalo" for sending your wonderful thoughts about Nona Lani Cottages for others to view. We are very lucky to have guests take in the grounds and get "it", the relaxation part of a vacation.

What a gift for us to hear your boyfriend could relax here & that you found Nona Lani a great central point to explore the beautiful island of Maui! Yes, we are not "fancy", but more than enough for those who want a comfortable, clean, relaxing and friendly little "home" to vacation in.

On behalf of my mother Nona & the entire Kong Family, we thank you again & look forward to your return to Nona Lani Cottages on Maui, Hawaii!

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong

“Nona Lani Cottages review”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We just returned from a one week stay at Nona Lani Cottages and want to share our experience with others. If you are looking for a relaxing, low key vacation in a convenient location on Maui, all at a reasonable price, this is the place to go. The cottages are spread out across Large well maintained gardens. There are BBQs, hammocks and loungers for communal use. Each cottage has a good size deck with table and chairs, and this is where we spent most of our time, watching the sunsets or enjoying the bird songs.
The kitchen was quite well equipped in some regards, and less so in others. There were plenty of good quality pans, cooking utensils, a full oven, microwave, etc. which was perfect for us as we ate at the cottage most evenings. However, the provision of drinking glasses was a bit erratic - two, mismatched wine glasses and four huge tumblers and nothing in between.
While the cottage was very clean and had everything we needed including iron, tv, beach chairs and umbrella, cool box, plenty of towels, the decor is looking very dated and tired. I can imagine that for some guests this would be disappointing though it didn't matter to us. I think that sprucing up the interiors of the cottages with new curtains, sofa covers, pictures, etc would make an immediate difference to the look and feel of these cottages.
The owners were very friendly and helpful, as was the gardener who kindly took our recycling away unasked.
The beach opposite the cottages is wonderful to walk along but not so great for swimming - somewhat murky water and submerged rocks. So we went by car each day to visit other beaches on Maui - no great hardship.
All in all, we highly recommend Nona Lani Cottages for an inexpensive, low key Maui vacation. If you're looking for 5 star luxury and modern minimalist decor, don't stay here. But if you're looking for a friendly, low key and inexpensive vacation, we recommend you consider these cottages.

Room Tip: If light traffic noise bothers you, don't stay in the ocean view cottages. We easily managed to...

Aloha Janet A. from Nona Lani Cottages on beautiful Maui, Hawaii. We appreciate you taking the time to let other people know about your positive experience at Nona Lani Cottages on your 1 week stay. Yes, we have a great price, wonderful grounds, and friendly staff!

We are in the exciting planning stages of updating our cottage interiors and so we thank you for your feedback in what is important to you for your vacation. We will take note of those items your review pointed out.

Now I cannot speak for the week you were here, but I literally just returned from a wonderfully relaxing swim in the "smooth as lake" and clear blue ocean across from our property which we call "Kong's Cove". Since your review mentioned you just returned from Maui, I think you were here when we had a few days of wind and rain and so that would account for the murky water. I am sorry the ocean here was not as nice but isn't it great that you could drive only a few minutes away and the waters would be a bit calmer?

Maui is great and it awaits your return... as we do to our family grounds... Nona Lani Cottages. Mahalo and keep in touch. We run unpublicized (direct booking) specials for our return guests so check in with us by email or phone before you plan your next visit. Aalooohaa !

“Everything we needed in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

I have to start out by thanking the family who own the cabins for a lovely time. With three generations happy to provide suggestions for places to go and things to do, we felt like part of the family too (one of the sisters even offered to lend me her coat for a morning trip to Haleakala!) Another one of the sisters also makes fresh leis and upon checking in (when they heard we were on our honeymoon) we were given a beautiful lei.

We agree with the other reader who liked staying in Cabin 7: so did we and we loved it. The garden-view cabins are great because the lanai (patio) looks out onto beautifully manicured grounds, we had lounge chairs and a hammock right outside the door and parking is only a few steps away. There were shared BBQs on the grounds (and because we were there over the holidays, the grounds and cabins were decorated with festive lights).

In our research on where to stay we considered staying at the Days Inn as well but after staying there for just one day, we were so grateful we chose the cabins for our week stay. Although they were dated (certainly not a luxury resort) and definitely showing wear, they had everything we needed with a separate bathroom, bedroom, and living room/kitchen. It was great to have a big fridge, dishes (even though we mostly ate out, we had breakfast there), and space to spread out. There were very much appreciated lawn chairs, beach mats, umbrella, and cooler in the closet which we used all week. They even had an an iron and vacuum. The only thing noticeably missing was a hair dryer, which I borrowed from the office (but it was the only one for all the cabins).

I would definitely recommend the Nona Lani cabins to others. Another added plus was the location. The cabins are located in the north/central part of Kihei - it is so much quieter and less touristy (no junk shops everywhere and the beach across the street is very quiet). If we wanted to do the busy touristy things, we could easily drive there. In addition, its location made it so convenient to travel to all other parts of Maui (and the airport was less than 30 minutes away even with traffic).

Aloha from Nona Lani Cottages and the Kong Family!

We thank you for your heartfelt and candid review as we love constructive advice. We are presently in the idea stage of planning for the remodeling of the cottages so your thoughts are welcome, such as the hair dryer topic. (We used to have one in every cottage but alas, some guests forgot to leave them upon their departure). One of our thoughts is to add hairdryers attached to the wall in the bathroom.

Yes we do understand your love with the Garden View cottages. Besides having so much greenery to look at, the important point is that the Garden View cottages are further from the roadway and for the most part, have less noise than the Ocean View cottages. Upon reservations, we ask if guests prefer a Garden or Ocean view, (not a specific cottage) and surprisingly we have many guests who want to see the ocean first thing in the morning as well as the beautiful sunsets in the evening as they sip their refreshments from the comfort of their lanai.

Yes, we are very fortunate to be located away from the tourist area and so central to the other parts of the island including the airport.

The nice swimming beach (we call "Kong's Cove") is wonderful as it allows you to walk for miles as well as see canoe paddlers and sunbathers.

Your review makes Nona Lani Cottages sound close to perfect (I want to vacation there!), but needing some updating. And so we are happy to let you know that is in the works! We look forward to your return in future and thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Sincerely,
Cherlyn Kong

Aloha from Nona Lani Cottages! Thank you for your review and letting others know about our beautiful grounds and also that there is a roadway between our property and the beach ("So. Kihei Rd."). We are glad that you chose a Garden View cottage for your stay. At the time of phone reservations, we always inform our potential guests about the road noise and surprisingly many guests, especially from a city setting prefer to have the full ocean view & tune out the traffic noise. But your information is great so they can see it before making their phone or online reservation! Mahalo & we look forward to your return visit!

Mahalo for your candid review. We are so glad that your final words were "I doubt it is from bed bugs." Because Hawaii is in a tropical setting & that means all kinds of bugs live in this warm climate, we have a regular service that sprays a non-toxic solution to keep the bugs in check so our guests will not be inconvenienced. I am sorry that we were unaware of your discomfort & we ask that you accept our deepest apologies. We hope that you return to Nona Lani Cottages in the future and make up for this experience.
