“Note to housekeeping - you could do better!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

After reading the reviews here, I didn't have much hope for this hotel. We chose this one over it's neighbor as it seemed to get the better reviews.

It wasn't as bad as I'd feared. Yes, it's located on a harbor, not a beach you'd like to sit on, or water you want to swim in, but not nearly as bad as some harbors around the world.

The hotel lobby has a very austere look to it, like it hasn't been renovated since they built the place, whenever that was (the 50's?)

Check-in is at 4, and it would appear that unless you're part of a tour group or the front desk staff take a shining to you, you will wait until 4 to get a room. There was a gent that arrived before us, was told to wait 30 minutes, and was still waiting an hour later - well after 4, when I went to use the phone. (Not paying hotel rates for toll-free calls)

Theres complimentary free wi-fi in the lobby, and a LAN cable providing access in the room. Wifi in the room would have been great as ipads/phones don't have ethernet ports, but this was better than nothing. Anyone else notice how rare "free wi-fi" is these days? It seems like every time I see an SSID that says "freewifi", it comes with an unreasonable hourly/daily/monthly fee attached. If you're charging for it, it's not free.

The room was much better than I expected. You know, I don't go looking for problems. I don't think you should have to pay $300 a night for a clean hotel room with staff that treat you well. Perhaps I'm wrong. That being said, I did note the following:

The front desk staff isn't the friendliest group in the world.

The windows had so much salt or something else on the outside that a half decent view of the outside world was foggy. A shame, as our room was far enough out towards the water that it wouldn't have been a half-bad view.

There were two windows that opened. We kept them open at night to get some fresh air (though to be honest, I didn't notice the second window until the second night as you have to shove the heavy curtains all the way open to see that it's there)

The air conditioning unit above one window was so noisy that sleeping with it on was next to impossible.

My main concern where housekeeping was concerned was what I'm hoping was coffee that somehow found its way on the wall near the bed and had dripped down the wall and hadn't been cleaned - and the mold in the shower. Who knows how long it'd been there. How can you make the bed and not notice that? Photo attached.

I know some things can slip by, but really? Someone spits/spills something brown on a light colored wall and housekeeping doesn't notice?

There was also a lot of black mold on the shower door liner and the grout in the shower itself (again, see photo) Yuck.

Re: assuming the problem with the cloudy windows was salt - you live in a climate where you don't have to deal with snow and sub-zero temperatures. Is it really that difficult to clean the exterior windows more often than they are being done? Especially the ground floor units.

Now not to sound totally negative, the hotel is close to the airport, conveniently located close to the Maui Mall, has LOTS of free parking, the wifi, and rates that seem to be reasonable considering Maui prices. We used it as a base to operate from as we only had 2 days on the island.

“Overall: an excellent hotel on Maui”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I stayed three nights at the Maui Beach Resort, which is located across the street from a large shopping mall.
My room, which was very clean, had a double bed, a writing desk and lamp, a flat screen TV, a telephone, a nice dresser with two large drawers, a safe, a refrigerator, a radio alarm clock, and a closet with many hangers and a long shelf.
The bathroom was spotless. It had a bathtub with a shower, but I didn’t like the soap dispensers because they were awkward to access, especially when taking a bath. I would have preferred separate tubes of soap, shampoo and body lotion (no body lotion was even provided).
The room had a small balcony with a plastic chair; my room on the second floor overlooked the landscaped courtyard of the hotel.
The room was equipped with free Internet if the guest(s) brought a computer, which I did. I really enjoyed having that small luxury, rather than having to go to the lobby and use WiFi there (also available for free).
I ate frequently at this hotel’s restaurant and found the food to be quite tasty and plentiful, especially for the price I paid for the hotel and all the meals there.
Overall, I rather liked this hotel and would recommend it to TripAdvisor readers.

“As Expected...”

It wasn't a great hotel... The courtyard is pleasant and it is beach front. The rooms were tiny, really tiny. Upgraded shower heads, moderate bed and clean room. Lobby left something to be desired. We included the breakfast in our room rate which I would recommend as the prices seemed high for the buffet. Nice spread, lots of options. Open style seating with pool view.
Overall you pay for what you get and this is a good option for a close to the hotel airport at a rate you can choke down. We stayed one night...I wouldn't have wanted to stay longer.

Room Tip: As for a garden view!!

“I'm sure the rooms are getting smaller!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Thiis is our 2nd stay at the Maui Beach Hotel. I'm sure the rooms have shrunk since our last visit. We were certainly squeezed in this time. This hotel has everything you need, but if you like a bit more space you might have to specifically request a larger room. The breakfast was really nice with plenty of options for all tastes. We bought the room and breakfast package through Expedia which was cheaper than buying the breakfast direct from the hotel (maybe that's why we got the tiny room this time!). We prefer to stay in Kahalui when in Maui, so the choice of hotels is limited, but the good bus service means you don't need a car to get to many of the attractions.

Room Tip: To avoid being sueezed in like sardines, request a larger room.

“This may be a "Last Resort" when you have no choice.”

The stay at the mMaui Beach Hotel may have been better than sleeping in the car, at at least there was a shower and close to a nice Shopping Center.

The bed was hard, the highway was busy all night and it was hard to sleep; Getting up early and checking out was the high light of the stay.

Room Tip: Make reservations somewhere else, farv in advance.
