There are two cottages available, and my husband and I stayed in the "tradewinds" one. I think the other is called "cabana." After seeing such glowing reviews here on TripAdvisor we thought we were in for a super romantic getaway. It didn't really deliver.
The cottage itself was nice, with a well equipped kitchen. But it definitely didn't feel private. In fact, we returned from getting groceries and the owner was mowing the lawn right in front of our cottage. Not exactly peaceful. The owners have dogs that seem to roam the grounds, so if you don't like dogs, this may not be the place for you. We like dogs and they seemed friendly so it didn't bother us. Also, be aware that you likely won't have cell phone reception while at the cottage, even though the rest of Hana seemed fine.
Some reviews state that you can see/hear the ocean from the cottage. I don't know about the other one, but this is DEFINITELY not the case in the one we stayed in. The views weren't.
It's definitely more of a "jungle" setting than that of a "botanical garden." I was hoping to get photos of some exotic plants I had never seen before. A stroll through the garden took about 15 minutes and while it was cool to see plants in their natural setting, there wasnt anything unusual. I also felt like we were going to be devoured by insects, so bug spray was one of the first things on my list to get at the general store in Hana town.
The last point to mention is the geckos. They're ALL OVER. I don't mind them outdoors (though we did have to evict one swimming in the jacuzzi), but they also find their way into the cottage very easily through the windows. Even though I know they're harmless, it was unnerving and i found it hard to sleep.
Overall, my husband and I decided that bed and breakfast style places are not for us. The owners were nice but it was hard to not feel like we were imposing. We didn't feel particularly welcome in Hana town either, so we ended up leaving after one night even though we paid for two. Our goal was to see the Seven Sacred Pools, and after we did that, we really had no reason to stay.
