“Not for everyone”

There are two cottages available, and my husband and I stayed in the "tradewinds" one. I think the other is called "cabana." After seeing such glowing reviews here on TripAdvisor we thought we were in for a super romantic getaway. It didn't really deliver.

The cottage itself was nice, with a well equipped kitchen. But it definitely didn't feel private. In fact, we returned from getting groceries and the owner was mowing the lawn right in front of our cottage. Not exactly peaceful. The owners have dogs that seem to roam the grounds, so if you don't like dogs, this may not be the place for you. We like dogs and they seemed friendly so it didn't bother us. Also, be aware that you likely won't have cell phone reception while at the cottage, even though the rest of Hana seemed fine.

Some reviews state that you can see/hear the ocean from the cottage. I don't know about the other one, but this is DEFINITELY not the case in the one we stayed in. The views weren't.

It's definitely more of a "jungle" setting than that of a "botanical garden." I was hoping to get photos of some exotic plants I had never seen before. A stroll through the garden took about 15 minutes and while it was cool to see plants in their natural setting, there wasnt anything unusual. I also felt like we were going to be devoured by insects, so bug spray was one of the first things on my list to get at the general store in Hana town.

The last point to mention is the geckos. They're ALL OVER. I don't mind them outdoors (though we did have to evict one swimming in the jacuzzi), but they also find their way into the cottage very easily through the windows. Even though I know they're harmless, it was unnerving and i found it hard to sleep.

Overall, my husband and I decided that bed and breakfast style places are not for us. The owners were nice but it was hard to not feel like we were imposing. We didn't feel particularly welcome in Hana town either, so we ended up leaving after one night even though we paid for two. Our goal was to see the Seven Sacred Pools, and after we did that, we really had no reason to stay.

“Quiet, relaxing, and peaceful”

If you are staying in Hana I'm not sure you could beat this place. A quiet place in the middle of a flower garden was just what we needed after a few days on the busy side of the island. Plenty of utensils, pots and pans, gas grill, hot tub jacuzzi, full size fridge, basically everything you need. Just don't forget your bug spray. Eat lunch at Bruddah Hutt's and go to Homoa Beach!

“Eden on Earth: Far From the Madding Crowd”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2011

Serenity, tranquility, utter relaxation. If your aim in coming to Maui is to hang in resorts, get bound up in traffic, and mingle with hoards of tourists, then this isn't the place for you; on the other hand, if you're up for the distant roar of surf, the soothing twitters of morning birds, the peace and quiet that solitude brings, then step up to the Hana Cabana. An utter delight. Save a few bucks and take yourself down to Koki Beach, pick up a slab of ahi, and sear it on the porchside grill: a fully equipped kitchen fulfills whatever you may need. Get up early and stroll the paths through their flower and fruit farm. Maybe snag a papaya for breakfast. Rebecca and Mike are helpful, friendly (and mostly invisible) hosts. This was the high point of our 12-day Maui vacation. Wish we had stayed longer than our three days.

“Splendid piece of heaven.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2010

We really did not know what to expect from our trip to Hana. Upon arrival, the quiet solitude of this lovely cottage made the grueling Hana Highway well worth it. Rebecca and Mike are wonderful hosts, very knowledgeable and helpful. Our time spent (in Hana) and the surrounding area would not have been so enjoyable if not for this peaceful abode.
The only downside to staying in the Maui Rainforest area is the constant need for bug repellent. Our hosts did a fabulous job of insect control within the cottage and on the grounds, but if you venture out, remember to take your spray with you.

“Like being in the garden of Eden!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

Our experience staying in this cottage was nothing less than idyllic. It is located in the middle of a tropical flower and fruit garden. When I say it was like Eden, I mean it. You can see the ocean from the windows. There is an excellent hot tub. Because of the incredible privacy, my wife and I were able to use it in broad daylight, unclothed, without the slightest nervousness. The kitchen facilities were superb -- I would be happy to have them in my own home. We were able to prepare three wonderful breakfasts for ourselves using food purchased at the Hasagawa General Store down the road.
There is only one "downside," although we discovered that it was actually an asset: no cell phone or internet access. As a result, we were pretty cut off. But hey, sometimes that's a wonderful thing!
In sum, what I had thought would just be a nice place to stay while we explored Hana and the east side of Maui became, for my wife and me, a second honeymoon. This is the most romantic place I've ever stayed.
