“Yep, It's a Five!”

I was skeptical about the high ratings on TripAdvisor for Haiku Cannery Inn. But after five nights there in late January, I agree with nearly all the previous reviewers. This place deserves a 5.

We reached the Inn by driving up the road from Haiku village, where we saw an unassuming sign by the side of the road. We drove through a tree-and-vines tunnel and beheld a beautiful, well-maintained plantation-style home – it used to be the cannery manager's home in the old days.

Cannery manager was a nice gig. The grounds were as beautiful as the house itself – many fruit trees, birds, lawns, vines, coconut palms, and a view out to the ocean below.

We had the Sunrise Room, which was very spacious and pleasant, with a king-size bed (convertible to two doubles if needed), a big walk-in closet, a futon-style sofa and a window-side table for writing, knick-knacks, etc. The bathroom was big and nicely appointed, with a tiled shower and modern fixtures.

B&B’s on Maui are not allowed to give you a “cooked” breakfast, but the owner here, Benni D’Enbeau, did a great job putting out coffee/tea, yogurt, cereal, freshly-baked breads, and a lovely fresh fruit entrée each day, in our case a Hawaiian papaya half filled with strawberries. You can enjoy this spread in the house’s common area or dining room, or – our choice – on the open-air veranda while admiring the view and drinking in that cleansing Hawaiian air.

Benni, a recently retired attorney who runs the place with a smile and easy-going efficiency, struck a perfect balance between taking care of us and leaving us alone. We always felt she was there if we needed her, but she was also unobtrusive and allowed us to just enjoy our stay – and we certainly did.

One thing, just to make you aware – like many Hawaiian B&Bs, this one does not offer daily maid service. We discussed this with Benni and she said that anytime we needed anything (fresh linens/towels, emptying the wastebasket, etc.), we just needed to ask and it would be done right away. It turned out to be very relaxing not to have to plan our day around the maids. No worrying whether the DND sign was on the door, or if the maids might miss us that day, or when the drone and bump-bump of vacuums in the next room would disturb us. And, of course, maid service would no doubt raise the rates here – and we loved paying only $105 a night, a terrific bargain.

Nights were quiet, just the rustling of trees in the breeze, and days – well, pretty much the same. When we left, I was inspired to comment in the guest book with a haiku: “A beautiful stay/The Haiku Cannery Inn/Five nights of full peace.”

Room Tip: We were very happy with the Sunrise Room. As the name suggests, it does get a good bit of light ear...

“Great value”

This is a lovely place to stay. If you are looking for quality, quiet and something off the main road we highly recommend it. The property is the old pineapple cannery's managers house that the owner purchased around 40 years ago to raise her family there. The owner, Bennie, kids are grown and gone and as a new retiree she's decided to take on the B&B world. It was a good choice for us travellers! Bennie is friendly and informative yet unintrusive.

We stayed two nights in the Bamboo suite in late January. The unit is tasteful and well appointed, although some may say small as there really is not sitting area although there is a table with chairs. There is a mini kitchen (no stove or hot plate) and a nice continental breakfast is provided. We really enjoyed that it is a stand alone unit set off from the main house so it was very quiet and felt like our own little cottage in the tropics. People who stayed in rooms in the main house also had access to a mini kitchen and had a great verandah to enjoy breakfast and cocktails on.

There is access to the main house and internet and phone which was useful. Haiku market place is half a mile down the road. We ate twice at Colleen's we enjoyed it so much. And Haiku is really central giving you the option to head to Paia or upcountry with easy access.

Room Tip: We only rated sleep quality as very good since we are used to a king size bed and this was a queen.

“It was perfect for us.”

We didn't know what to expect before staying at the Haiku Cannery Inn. We were coming from Kihei for 5 days and 2 days in Lanai.
Even though Kihei was a little disappointing for us, we still enjoyed the amazing weather.

As soon as we arrived at the Inn, we relaxed instantly. We personally preferred that side of Maui rather than the more commercial one on the West side.
Benni made us feel comfortable right away and we loved the privacy and intimacy of the Bamboo suite. It was peaceful, quiet and frankly very affordable.
I didn't realize that we could hang out in the house so we did enjoy it as much as we could.

The house was just beautiful and you could easily see yourself live in it. We were surrounded by tropical trees, flowers, plants, fruits and we were blessed by a perfect weather.
Next time we return, we will stay for a whole week at the Inn for sure.

We didn't have a chance to say goodbye so I'll just say: thank you Bennie, you made our stay in Haiku very special.

“What a Gem”

We stayed at the Haiku Cannery Inn for 7 nights and would have stayed longer if time permitted. Our room was large, exceptionally clean, bright and airy. The owner Benni, who has lived on the island many years, was happy to help us plan our days and give us suggestions on where to dine. She also had a delicious breakfast awaiting for us each morning, she truly made our stay so enjoyable that we hope to return again some day. We have stayed in many B&B's in our travels and Benni's place will always be one of our favorites!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Sunrise Room but all the rooms are spacious and bright.
