“Nice & maintained - affordable stay on Lana'i”

While on the island of Lana'i we stayed at Hulopo'e Beach Campground for two nights (Feb.9 &10). The camping area has picnic tables and outdoor grills; I believe we were told no fires are allowed on the ground. The camping area is just a few yards from one of the nices beaches I've ever been to. There rockwall bathroom facility has three toilets on the womens side and I believe two on the mens in addition to a urinal. The bathroom has a sink, handsoap and paper towels. The bathrooms are cleaned each morning at about 6:30am. The campground at night was relatively quiet. You can hear the waves from the ocean but they were not thundering waves. The first night we stayed there was only one other tent there. The second night I believe there were 4 other tents. The Hulopo'e Beach Park & Campgrounds are about 1/4 mile from the harbor where the ferry comes over from Maui. It is an easy walk over, or you can rent a vehicle. There is a little store at the harbor; all other groceries and restuarants are about 15 minutes away in Lanai City. Castle & Cooke runs the campground (in addition to the other high priced resorts). In searching for places to stay on Lanai, I found our choses were 2 high priced resorts (Several hundred dollars a night for a room), the Lanai Hotel ($100/nt) or this campground. Expect to pay $30 for a camping permit, then $15 per person per night for camping. This was a very affordable way to say on Lana'i and I would recommend it to other! (The beach is fabulous, not over crowded, and you can hike a short ways up the cliff to see Sweetheart Rock and watch an amazing sunrise! Put that on your to-do list too!) I made reservation by calling Castle & Cooke, but you can also show up at the campground and just find a space. Each day a ranger will come around - you can register when you arrive and he will collect the payment for camping (he even carries a mobile credit card machine).

Room Tip: Either bring the food you need or rent a car to run into Lanai for groceries/meals

“Romantic Camping Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2011

Last month we decided to visit Lana'i and after hours of research we agreed on 2 nights of camping at Hulopo'e Beach and 1 night in a hotel (it would have been a last minute decision after we arrived). We enjoyed the campgrounds so much, we decided to camp there the entire 3 nights. The campgrounds are very well kept (minus all the deer poop all over the place) - we saw Castle & Cooke (the company who owns the campgrounds) employees cleaning and maintaining the property every day we were there. At first, the $30 one time permit fee and $10 per person per night seemed a bit steep, but after arriving, it was definitely worth it. The bathrooms (like the ones at most public beaches) were very clean, always well stocked and well lit. We saw two bathrooms on property. There is no hot water, so we showered during the day when the sun was out. We saw two showers (the public beach kind). Lana'i residents are the only ones allowed to camp on the beach...all others, even if you're kama'aina from another island must camp on the grassy area across the parking lot. Upon your arrival, a Castle & Cooke employee greets you, shows you where to set up your tent, goes over the rules and collects your money (check or credit card only). The rules weren't bad at all - no picking branches off the kiawe trees (you can walk into the bushes several feet behind the campsite to pick up fallen branches), clean up after yourselves (there were a lot of trash cans around) and no fires outside the BBQ grills.

The Four Seasons Manele Bay is a short 7-10 minute walk from the campsite, however, we enjoyed visiting the Four Seasons Lodge at Ko'ele better. Back to the Four Seasons Manele Bay - we mention it in case you need anything from the gift shop, want to use the nice bathrooms or want to purchase a voucher to use the shuttle service. (More later).
