“Off the beaton track in Hawaii”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Lanai is a small Island about 20 miles by 15miles. The hotel is situated in Lanai City the only settlement on the island with about 2000 inhabitants, on high ground overlooking the centre where there are small shops and a supermarket.
The hotel is traditional wooden built, the rooms are of average size with a small shower room. The rooms with a balcony are good, although Lanai city is about 1500 feet above sea level so to sit out in the evenings it can be cool. The walls are thin so some noise from other guests may be a problem. The hotel restaurant is excellent although not cheap. Continental breakfast is included in the room price, quite adequate but not extensive. No tv or radio so takes plenty of reading.
A 4 wheel drive jeep is needed to tackle the dirt roads around the island and they are rough, but lead to totally deserted beaches.Without a jeep you have to use the island bus service which is good and will take you 7 miles to the only beach with access by tarmac road, although one of the best beaches on the island.
A very different experience to Honolulu and a great place to visit. 3 or 4 days is probably about right.

Room Tip: Book a room with a balcony. It is shared with one other room but is quite spacious, sunny in afterno...

“Spend The Extra $ & Stay at a Four Seasons On The Island”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We LOVE Hawaii. We spent 3 nights here. Our flight from Oahu came into Lanai early in the evening. You have to pay an outragious amount to get to ANY of the 3 hotels on Lanai....and it's only about an 8-10 minute ride. Talk about price gauging.

From the outside, it looks very charming...just like you see on the web. Check-in was okay and we dropped our luggage off in the room. Went back to the bar area/restaurant and had a few drinks. The clientale here looked like they would be more suited to a National Park Inn. VERY casual...to say the least. Hotel looked okay...a little worn around the edges for sure.

Then, there is the room. We paid extra for a front porch room overlooking the "square" of Lanai. The cushions on ALL the chairs/sofa/and tables...ALL had heavy red dirt on them. You could not sit anywhere. It was disguisting. This was not because housekeeping overlooked it for a night or two. It's because it had not been looked on for WEEKS. The porch was useless.

The bed was up against one of the walls...something you do not really see in any nice hotel. Bedspread/linens were hard and very used. Worn, is a better word. Walls are paper thin...so you DO hear ALOT of room noise from others. Hardwood floors that could stand a new area rug...ours was old and frayed...and VERY worn. Cob webs in the corner that you could see w/ the lights on. Dim lamps as well.
BATHROOM: MAJOR issues here. SO tiny is was really hard to be in. You could not dry your hair in here for sure. SO small sink with water stains/marks...I assume from well water. Did not drain very well. Toilet that was operable...but did not flush good...if you know what I mean. The shower, well, it was there. Small and a pre-fab. The grout was moldy and BLACK. There was wood rot down in the corners of it by the floor. The towels were again hard and very old. It had a shower curtain that should have been replaced YEARS ago. Floor was pitiful. At night, the room was pretty cold. It does get cold here at night because of the elevation.

Breakfast(included) was just okay. Alot of gross food to feed us Americans..but nothing of any value or taste.

It is within easy walking distance to the town "square"...a few shops and a few mediocore places to eat. More just places to eat and not really restaurants. You can walk around the whole place within 30 minutes or less. Not much there. Car rental is about 5-10 minutes away in the other direction.

Shuttle takes you here and the 2 Four Season Resorts on Lanai. It's really like a bus.

If we were to ever go back to Lanai, we would stay at one of the Four Season Resorts for the extra money. They are like day & night. But, Lanai, is really like a one time place...as there really is not much there.

Room Tip: Inspect the room before you commit...and double check the bathroom and porch, if you have one.

“Nice but bathroom needs renovation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We stayed a couple of nights at the Hotel Lanai in January. We also booked a jeep through the hotel.
First off, we must have had the worse jeep from Dollar. It was rusty, very old, dirty, couldn't open the passenger door and the wipers were not working properly.
At first. we put up with it but decided that we wanted to get another car. Unfortunately, the second was as bad as the first one. Finally, we were given a good one (it's not what you want to go through when you are vacationing).

First impression of the hotel was good. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and the room was nice.
However, when you start looking closely, you can see things that need to be improved.
One bulb needed to be replaced in the bathroom (not my job to tell the hotel staff).
There is no TV (there is absolutely nothing to do in Lanai when night comes). However, the walls are so thin that TV could be a nuisance for guests.
The bathroom was in a rough shape. The tiles and the floor need to be replaced. A couple of areas were nasty looking.

The other problem is at night when the restaurant is open. It feels a bit awkward to hang out by the reception since people are having diner.

Last thing I have to mention is the barely average breakfast. In fact, there was no way we were going to have diner at the restaurant after having breakfast there.
And the restaurant was really expensive with an average of 30$ per entree.

On the positive note, the hotel is charming, with a good location. I would think it's better to have a car so you can explore what the island has to offer.
Lanai is different from its neighbors. It's very dry with a lot of nothing around but, with super friendly people.

I'm not sure if I would ever go back to Lanai but I'm glad we have experienced it at least once.

“Nice place”

We stayed at Hotel Lanai for 3 days and enjoyed our stay. The service was great, very friendly and helpful. Sarah is fantastic, she went out of her way to make our stay enjoyable. The room was quite small and noisy, the walls are very thin so you can hear everything that is going on in the place. The adjoining restaurant is very good.

Room Tip: The rooms with an adjoining porch are the best since there is no where to sit outside otherwise.

“Interesting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Nice rooms.

No TVs - TVs would be a plus since the evenings are quiet on the town and everything closes early.

Rooms have thin walls. Extremely loud in the evenings and mornings.

Great food at their restaurant. I recommend the ribs and meatloaf!

Breakfast was included. It was simple yet tasty.

My biggest complaint: the hotel overbooked our room after our first night stay. Their mistake not ours. Regardless, we got called while we were out trying to enjoy our vacation and asked to come back & move out of our room! With no apologies from the hotel & ZERO compensation for THEIR mistake.

Take this valuable advice from me - STAY at the Four Seasons!
