The cabins at the Lodge of Koke'e have received mixed reviews - I read them all and decided to take a chance. I am very glad that I did.
Here's the deal - This is NOT a luxury facility. Keep that in mind and you will not be disappointed. Our cabin was HUGE (#12 - Olapa) Located at the end of a small group of four cabins it was private and beautiful. The interior was very clean, which is not to say that it didn't appear grubby. The bathroom is very small: tiny mirror over a tiny sink, shower stall & toilet. The shower floor is stained from years of hikers showering off red dirt. it may look a little grubby but it is CLEAN!
The linens are left for you in a plastic bag. The towels a bright white - the sheets a pathetic grayish white some with raggedy hems - BUT CLEAN and they smelled good too!
Many reviewers mentioned how cold it would be up there so we brought Featherlite 20 degree Sleeping Bags and were very glad we did. Once the wood stove dies down the temperature drops. Outside it was 50 degrees at 7 in the morning on Sept. 5-8.
We arrived just after 5 PM and the Lodge closed at 4. The key & instructions were left on a board by the Lodge door. (We weren't the last ones in either :) Our late arrival meant no chance to purchase firewood ($8.00 per bucket - also incl. starter wood, matches & newspaper)
Anticipating a chilly night, I had decided to take a stroll when it struck me... this is a FOREST there must be some wood lying around for the gathering and that is exactly what I did. Then I went and got the Jeep and came back to the pile I had built by the side of the road. We were warm & toasty all night. This really is luxury camping as opposed to motel or motor court living, think of it this way and it is GREAT!
The kitchen provided an antique electric stove that worked just fine, A clean fridge and immaculate tile counters.
For the location, clean air and privacy this absolutely cannot be topped. Do not confuse old & tired with dirty. The Lodge at Koke'e is an absolute BARGAIN. Come prepared (bring your own paper towels, bath soap & shampoos) Plan to provide your own food & beverages. There is no TV, no cell phone service, no radio - it is a wonderful step back in time. Come and relish it.
I suggest you book early. I booked in January for September and ended up with the best possible cabin - at least it seemed it to me. Having the lookouts to yourself before the day trippers arrive is PRICELESS!
By staying up at the top of the Canyon you get the gorgeous views before the clouds roll in!
Breakfast in the Cafe is pretty good but they don't open until 9 AM ... makes for a late start when hiking. I suggest you get a piece of the chocolate coconut pie to go and have it by the wood-stove after your supper! Sit back and enjoy the spirit of Aloha! (Lunch ends at 2 but they'll do take-out until 3)
Also suggest you take some time to visit the museum. It is well worth your time and you need a park map ($2.00) anyway. The room on the left as you enter can easily be overlooked but you should really check it out and see the carving of the canyon and the displays that identify the plant life you will see in the park.
By the way, if you stay at the Lodge at Koke'e it is only a 40 minute ride down the canyon to the small boat harbor at Kikiaola for the Liko Kauai cruise and there is ABSOLUTELY NO TRAFFIC, not to mention the fabulous views.
