“Luxury Camping at the Penthouse of Paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

The cabins at the Lodge of Koke'e have received mixed reviews - I read them all and decided to take a chance. I am very glad that I did.

Here's the deal - This is NOT a luxury facility. Keep that in mind and you will not be disappointed. Our cabin was HUGE (#12 - Olapa) Located at the end of a small group of four cabins it was private and beautiful. The interior was very clean, which is not to say that it didn't appear grubby. The bathroom is very small: tiny mirror over a tiny sink, shower stall & toilet. The shower floor is stained from years of hikers showering off red dirt. it may look a little grubby but it is CLEAN!

The linens are left for you in a plastic bag. The towels a bright white - the sheets a pathetic grayish white some with raggedy hems - BUT CLEAN and they smelled good too!

Many reviewers mentioned how cold it would be up there so we brought Featherlite 20 degree Sleeping Bags and were very glad we did. Once the wood stove dies down the temperature drops. Outside it was 50 degrees at 7 in the morning on Sept. 5-8.

We arrived just after 5 PM and the Lodge closed at 4. The key & instructions were left on a board by the Lodge door. (We weren't the last ones in either :) Our late arrival meant no chance to purchase firewood ($8.00 per bucket - also incl. starter wood, matches & newspaper)

Anticipating a chilly night, I had decided to take a stroll when it struck me... this is a FOREST there must be some wood lying around for the gathering and that is exactly what I did. Then I went and got the Jeep and came back to the pile I had built by the side of the road. We were warm & toasty all night. This really is luxury camping as opposed to motel or motor court living, think of it this way and it is GREAT!

The kitchen provided an antique electric stove that worked just fine, A clean fridge and immaculate tile counters.

For the location, clean air and privacy this absolutely cannot be topped. Do not confuse old & tired with dirty. The Lodge at Koke'e is an absolute BARGAIN. Come prepared (bring your own paper towels, bath soap & shampoos) Plan to provide your own food & beverages. There is no TV, no cell phone service, no radio - it is a wonderful step back in time. Come and relish it.

I suggest you book early. I booked in January for September and ended up with the best possible cabin - at least it seemed it to me. Having the lookouts to yourself before the day trippers arrive is PRICELESS!
By staying up at the top of the Canyon you get the gorgeous views before the clouds roll in!

Breakfast in the Cafe is pretty good but they don't open until 9 AM ... makes for a late start when hiking. I suggest you get a piece of the chocolate coconut pie to go and have it by the wood-stove after your supper! Sit back and enjoy the spirit of Aloha! (Lunch ends at 2 but they'll do take-out until 3)

Also suggest you take some time to visit the museum. It is well worth your time and you need a park map ($2.00) anyway. The room on the left as you enter can easily be overlooked but you should really check it out and see the carving of the canyon and the displays that identify the plant life you will see in the park.

By the way, if you stay at the Lodge at Koke'e it is only a 40 minute ride down the canyon to the small boat harbor at Kikiaola for the Liko Kauai cruise and there is ABSOLUTELY NO TRAFFIC, not to mention the fabulous views.

“Pack your own food!”

If you're absolutely starving, then it's your only option. But we'd strongly suggest you pack a picnic before heading up. We had a cheeseburger and kalua pork, and they both were not so good. My burger came with one apple slice. Fries or any other sides were not an option. Friendly staff, but service was on island pace. No view either. So bottom line, pack your own food.

“Classic, rustic launching pad for hiking and birdwatching!”

Kokee is a jewel: lush, cool and full of native and endemic species. How fun to wake up in an old wooden cabin with a pot bellied fireplace to hear native birds chirping, to spend the day hiking, lounging and enjoying the "off the grid" life - no cell reception, no TV, no hassles. To best enjoy the Lodge: bring your own firewood and your own sheets (the ones they provide are fine, but a bit rough and well used). Bring lots of beer and food and a small barbeque. There is a full kitchen in the cabins including a fridge, but no barbeque. This is DIY camping, people, be ready to sweep the cabin and cook and hike. It is lovely, primitive and well worn. It is not cheap, but the location, for the right people, is awesome and romantic and sweet.

Room Tip: Ask for the Alakai cabin (closest to the restaurant) - queen sized bed.

“Loved every part of our stay, especially the fireplace...”

My husband and I are pretty adventurous and enjoy the outdoors. We've stayed in state park cabins and we looked forward to staying in the Lodge for the first time since the accommodations are so close to the many hikes the park has to offer. We were a little nervous and concerned after reading some of the reviews that were posted. Imagine our surprise when we pulled up to our cabin and walked into a spacious 2 bedroom cabin, fully furnished, working refrigerator and stove, fireplace, and a cute living area.

We had a bag of linens provided (towels/sheets) which were not dirty or stained and our bed had a brand new mattress (far firmer than our bed at home). Toilet paper and dish soap were provided! We did our research before we came and decided to bring our sleeping bags (since the temperature is cooler in the Park) and we stocked up on firewood (and got our groceries too) in the cute town of Waimea before we drove up to the park.

The kitchen is basic: pots/pans, dishes, utensils, but we still made wonderful meals.
Yes, the stove is a little dirty, the refrigerator has some rust, the cupboards do feel grubby, the wood floors get dirty; we had no problems with plumbing. We're so happy everything worked! Of course the cabin is going to be a little dirty and rustic - you're in the middle of Waimea Canyon!

After our long hikes and days of exploring the canyon, each evening we'd get the fire started, have a wonderful meal, a nice hot shower, and good sleep. We did a lot of hiking and loved that our cabin was next to the Nualolo Trail. I think many people have unreasonable expectations when staying in cabins at state parks. If you are expecting a resort-like experience, this is not for you. This is a time to enjoy peace and solitude (except the roosters, but they were a nice alarm clock), bring a good book, listen to nature, take in the scenery, and hike to waterfalls. We loved our stay in the cabin and would do it again in a heartbeat.

“Worst cabin experience of my life”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

I like on Kauai and am also an outdoor and nature lover. I am use to roughing it, but these cabins were beyond gross. TRAVELER BEWARE: There is no noise ordinance nor is there any discernment on the part of the management to not rent to teenagers or put up any rules regarding noise. The pillows were moldy and the blankets had probably never been washed, nor probably had the floor. The mattress was stained, dirty and incredibly uncomfortable. I made the mistake of walking across the room in bare feet and was dismayed to find them covered with paint flakes and termite droppings. You cannot drink from the faucet as there is lead present (there was actually a sign outside). So we had to buy bottled water at $2 each for small bottles. I was told the cabin came stocked with kitchen supplies, what a joke. No fry pan, one knife, not even a spatula. The burners on the stove were a safety hazard as the numbers indicating temperature were gone, only 2 burners worked. The oven did not work- this was the one thing we were told in advance. We were given linens, which were thread bear and stained. We used one of the sheets to cover the top of the blanket so we would not have to touch it too much. There are no lamp shades on any of the light bulbs. The toilet would not flush properly and the place was extremely dirty, run down and ill maintained. None of this is apparent from the website of Kokee cabins. To add insult to injury we were booked in adjoining duplex cabins to 6, yes that is 6 17 year old recent high school grads who did not require sleep. The walls have no insulation and are just plywood seperating the two cabin areas so relaxing here was out of the question. Friday night we were up past 1:30 am listening to the parting and Saturday were woken up listening to some one throwing up out side our window. We repeatedly asked for consideration- but with no one to complain to, what do you do. There is an after hours number printed on the note attached to our key, but as there is no cell phone reception good luck trying to call it. The lady renting the cabin next to us was irritated as well. The kid running the gift shop/cabin rental for the weekend could care less. We asked to change cabins after the first night, but it is a busy time so that was not possible. So much for a weekend away in peaceful Kokee. The hiking was spectacular as always and the general spiritual feeling and beauty of the mountain is wonderful. These cabins, the lack of maintainence and possible neighbors however should be really avoided. Wish we camped instead. In addition, the hiking map (which costs $2) has a number of errors on it- don't trust it, use a guide book instead.

Room Tip: camp or stay at a hotel off mountain, in Waimea town.
