Despite the lobby and the restaurant being closed for repairs, the hotel is a decent place and has an ideal location on the point of Hanalei Bay. Condos with full kitchens make it easy to feed yourself on a budget, and you get plenty of exercise walking up and down the hill to the beach (or you can ring for a golf cart ride).
A few problems: The hotel had blocked off the only east/west walkway for their construction equipment, leaving guests to detour around the pool or through a tennis court to get to the other side of the property. The pool route was occasionally cordoned off too, and someone once commented on us walking through the unoccupied tennis court, when the other routes were unavailable. Not exactly good planning or guest-friendly. Also, while I was on the computer in the lobby, two staff members (one local front desk woman and one haole woman) were installing a coffee table and, seeing I was on the computer, proceeded to ask if they should turn it in another direction for more privacy, demonstrating the need of such by leaning over me and proceeding to read what I was writing online. It was quite rude. I concurred on the need for more privacy, but the computer remained in exactly the same position during the rest of my stay. So much for privacy and customer service.
We chose this hotel and location to surf, but everywhere we went in Hanalei Bay (even the beach break) we were accosted by hostile local surfers who would approach us in the water and yell at us or try to run us over in the water and then yell at us. Very pleasant. Be aware of this if you are planning on getting in the water with board.
Room Tip: Rooms on the west side have a view of the ocean or mountains.
