Aaaaaaaaah! The lanai. I could have just lived on the lania...beautiful views, soft breezes, birds singing in the background, but the lania was just the beginning.
Just got back from spending a week at the Shearwater. Wish it would have been two weeks. Stayed in unit #310 for the first six nights and stayed one night in unit #107. #310 was incredible…a two story, 3 bedroom /3 bath unit with huge lanai on main floor and a second smaller lanai on the top floor. The lanai on the main floor was large, had a table for outdoor meals and two lounge chairs for relaxing. The view was incredible…180 degrees of ocean with the Kileau Lighthouse in the distance. Unit was just 20 feet from the cliffs edge that descended to the ocean 200 feet below. Felt as if we were perched right over the ocean. Was a perfect place to watch the sunrise with a fresh cup of Kona coffee while being fanned with gentle breezes. Could access the lanai from both living room and the master bedroom. I could roll over in bed and enjoy that same awesome ocean view.
Rest of the unit was well maintained and nicely, though sparsely, decorated. The kitchen was well-stocked with appliances we didn’t expect but enjoyed using like a Jen-Aire grill top and a rice/vegetable steamer. The bathrooms were large with oversized showers.
Unit #107 was nice but not over the top like #310. #107 was just a 2 bedroom /2 bath one-story unit and since it was a first floor unit, the vaulted ceilings were gone. Showers were small. And most of all the lanai, though still having an ocean view, was directly in front of the pool. The privacy we had in the previous unit was gone. Luckily, while we were told that the Shearwater stays at 100% occupancy, we were surprised how infrequently we noticed other visitors and even when there was someone at the pool, it was usually just a couple quietly sunbathing.
Used maintenance once. Were surprised how quickly they responded; problem was taken care of completely and quickly. Used the activities once. List of activities was pretty extensive. We participated in the hula lessons and it was one of the highlights of the trip. Learning this ancient art of storytelling with my daughters was special, and I left with a deep respect for the Hawaiians and their culture. For many mornings after, I awoke to the songs we had learned playing in my head.
There are four Wyndham resorts in the Princeville area and as a guest of one, you can use the amenities of all. We swam at the pool at Bali Hai, an incredible pool with waterfalls cascading down stones at one end with a sandy shallow beach entry at the other.
The North shore of Kauai is not for everyone, but this was our second visit to the North shore and we love the quietness of it. The best beaches are up here…Ke’e, Anini, Tunnels, etc. Hanalei is close by and offers multiple dining choices. The beauty is unmatched and the slow, relaxed pace helps remind you that you are on vacation.
Can’t wait for my next trip! As far as the Shearwater, book it, but request a top floor unit away from the pool.
