“Nice Stay in Kauai”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

We stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon and had a really nice stay. The hotel is good, nothing really exceptional to note. Kauai is so beautiful so you can’t really go wrong with where you stay!

The pool area was nice, and it may have been a fluke – but I did not go in the pool after what I saw floating in it the first day. It’s a big pool, I get it – it probably isn’t reasonable that it be 100% clean all the time, but I couldn’t get it out of my head and did not go in after the first day.

I really liked the beach area – some of the other beaches I went to on the island I was intimidated by the waves and didn’t go in the water much, but being set on an inlet the wanes are much more manageable at this beach. I also was able to paddle board which was great.

The food at the resort was good but pricey, a short walk will take you to Dukes which was our favorite place to eat the ten days we were there.

There were a few things the property could have done to stand out – I know they are a resort property and have different rules for upgrading elite members, although I was hoping as a gold elite on my honeymoon travelling during a very slow time that I would be upgraded at least to an ocean view room. I inquired on check in and was not upgraded, was a little irritated while chatting with the bar tender later in the week and he was telling me how occupancy was incredible low that week. I don’t mean to sound entitled, I just am normally upgraded at other properties.

“Over the Top Grounds and Pool”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Spacious one bedroom unit with view of fabulous pool and cove/ocean. The hotel buildings are concrete 60s style, but the rooms and facilities are all updated Marriott style, and the grounds and pool are fabulous. (I never thought I'd say that about a pool at a large resort...) When this property was a Westin, someone had some grandiose plans and the statuary and gardens around the koi pool reflect that. Runners and walkers can go up a hill to the lagoons/golf course area (and pilings for a Ritz Carlton project that fizzled) for a beautiful location to work out.

WiFi not available in rooms due to concrete construction, but you can sit on the veranda by the pool and connect to your heart's delight! Staff were all very courteous and helpful.

Lihue is centrally located, but the main road north and west is under construction, so we spent some time in traffic, not our favorite vacation activity.

“Pool and grounds are the highlight...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Nice room, decent meal options, but the highlight was the pool and grounds. Landscaping very well done. Wish I would have stayed here for the entire trip. More convenient location to most attractions on Kauai.

“great location, wonderful pool, poor lock offs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Very nice place to stay, lock off was not what we expected. The hotel was very nice, but if you looking for comfort and space do not use the lock off. It is a murphy bed very uncomfortable. Very small area for that you think your getting. I will say the pool makes up for anything else. We loved going in the evening to relax in the hot tubs which there was plenty of. Then jumping in the pool for a swim, was just wonderful!!!
The elevators had problems on our floor which was getting very flustrating by the end of the week. We did report the problem and so did others but it was never fixed. The staff on the floor was super nice about it and showed how to get to the service elevator and make it down with out any problems. We really loved having Dukes right next door and enjoyed every meal we had. The salad bar was so nice after a long day and not wanting anything heavy.

“The Pool is the Star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We were fortunate to have a one bedroom unit, as a one-room might be small for a week-long stay. Our suite had a well-equipped kitchen with microwave, fridge, toaster, blender and lots of cutlery and plates. The fourth-floor room had a glimpse of the ocean - really Kalapaki Bay, not the ocean. It was quiet, with very little plumbing or hallway noise. The only noise we had was from neighbouring balconies (called Lanais in Hawaii). Arrival was impressive with a grand escalator leading down three floors to the courtyard and the reception area. The central gardens, with huge Koy pond was endlessly interesting. Various birds and fish to keep you amused and a talking parakeet. This is one of only three resorts on the Island with elevators!

The Resort has three decent restaurants, and the Kalapaki Bay area adjacent has several more. All the major helicopter companies are located nearby, with Jack Harter being right in the Resort.

But the huge circular pool is the real star of this property. Apparently the largest in all of Hawaii, it is heated and has an island in the middle.

Our daughter gave us a week of her timeshare to go here, but I think rooms start at about $200 per night (but go to $1,000 and more for some). Compared to the $135 we paid for an Aston property in Kapa'a, that would be a good deal and much less than you will pay in Princeville.

This is a great location to focus on the south and west of Kauai. We moved to Kapa'a for a second week and focused on the east and north shores.

Avoid valet parking, since the parking lot is close and you can save a few bucks.

The beach on Kalapaki Bay is fairly small, but has nice sand is well protected from the big surf. We saw a monk seal on the beach.

We found the reception desk service to be friendly and efficient, but the amenities and services of the Resort were not well explained, either by the reception or in any literature. We had to ask for a room service menu. If you don't have a hotel-issued towel on your chair by the pool, you might be asked for identification.
